How Claude Puel has laid the foundations for a successful future under Brendan Rodgers

[ad_pod ]Puel out, Puel out, Puel out.ÂOn Sunday morning, the Leicester City supporters got their ultimate wish: the Frenchman was dismissed from his position following a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Crystal Palace. The decision was largely greeted with enthusiasm by the supporters, but was he really that bad? Plenty of outsiders simply don’t get it; Leicester and Southampton fans are united in their opinion. There is something fundamental missing from Puel’s managerial repertoire which has stunted his reputation in English football. While his latest dismissal may well represent the last time we see him in a Premier League dugout, it appears his departure has paved the way for Brendan Rodgers to return to English football following a successful hiatus in Scotland.According to the BBC, Rodgers is set to replace Puel in the manager’s hotseat after holding talks with Leicester, abandoning Celtic just days after they were dumped out of the Europa League by Valencia.

The Bhoys will, naturally, be incandescent to see the boss depart the club. But, once the initial state of mourning dissipates, supporters of the Scottish giants should be able to sympathise with the decision.

On paper, Leicester have the best starting eleven outside of the top-six. Recent victories against Manchester City and Chelsea combined with an unfortunate defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley have provided the tangible proof to suggest they have the quality to break the status quo in English football.

Everton are regularly cited as the club with the most legitimate ambitions of toppling the established order, but why not Leicester?

They have the players to challenge the supremacy of the top-six and a strong history of defying the odds. Rodgers will surely be salivating at the prospect of working with the current crop of talent.

James Maddison, Wilfred Ndidi, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell and Kasper Schmeichel are all players with credentials to play for a top-six club; Kelechi Iheanacho, Harvey Barnes, Demarai Gray and Hamza Choudhury are all captivating young talents with huge scope to rise in the game.

The irony is though, that Puel has already done much of the hard work by bedding those young players in – Rodgers, albeit with obvious input of his own too, is now set to reap the rewards of that often uneasy transition.

This was an opportunity which Rodgers simply couldn’t refuse, but not just because of the players at his disposal. Players, after all, are limited by the parameters in which they are asked to operate.

Under Claudio Ranieri, Leicester were the masters of incisive and cutting-edge, counter-attacking football.

But the club have undergone something of a transition since his departure – one which has largely been instigated and implemented by Puel. That shift has seen, much to the disgust of plenty of supporters, Jamie Vardy’s importance diminish.

The default mechanism is no longer to exploit Vardy’s jet-heeled speed between the channels, as a more measured and possession-based game has been championed by Puel.

Sceptical supporters have lambasted the approach as boring and lacking direction but, with some expertly devised fine-tuning, the new identity taking shape could take Leicester to the next level.

That’s where Rodgers comes in. The former Liverpool boss is renowned for his effective possession-based game, and it was his determination to stay true to his principles at Swansea which enabled him to take the step up into jobs at both Anfield and Celtic Park.

What the above statistics reveal about Rodgers is telling: his legacy will be imprinted into the core at Leicester and the fruits of his labour will continue to persist beyond his tenure. Take nothing away from Michael Laudrup, he was also a smart tactician with a similar approach, but the fact Swansea’s possession only dropped by 1.8% after Rodgers’ departure speaks volumes about what he can bring to the King Power Stadium.

The implementation of a new philosophy is not an overnight process and the Foxes faithful cannot expect instant results.

However, the waiting game has been significantly reduced by Puel. Strides have been made to adapt to a possession-based style which is well-suited to the myriad of exceptional individuals who currently reside within the squad. The conclusion of a nostalgic era defined by an over-reliance on Vardy’s pace on the counter-attack is on the horizon.

Rodgers is blessed with the credentials to take Leicester to the next level, but his potential for future success has been aided by an inadvertent helping hand from the man who was vehemently ushered away from the club.

Arsenal fans react to Fabregas throwback

[ad_pod ]

Cesc Fabregas has taken to Twitter to celebrate the anniversary of Arsenal’s historic Champions League win over AC Milan.

The Gunners became the first ever English team to win at the San Siro when they earned a 2-0 victory in 2008.

Fabregas scored his side’s first goal on the night, in the 84th minute, with a rasping long-range drive and Emmanuel Adebayor added a second in injury time as Arsene Wenger’s side qualified for the quarter-finals in style.

Arsenal lost to Liverpool in the last eight, going down 5-3 on aggregate, but the victory in Italy is fondly remembered by Gunners fans.

Fabregas stayed with the club until 2011 when he joined Barcelona, and he has since played for both Chelsea and AS Monaco.

But he took the time out of his day to post a throwback tweet on Monday, and he was so eager to celebrate he even got the date wrong, incorrectly positing that it was 10 years ago rather than 11.

And Arsenal fans have praised the Spaniard’s performance on that famous night. Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

West Brom target David Sesay; Mason Holgate’s replacement?

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, West Brom have joined the race for Crawley Town youngster David Sesay as Darren Moore hunts for a long-term option at right-back. The starlet will surely make a fantastic replacement for loanee Mason Holgate should he not sign on a permanent basis.

What’s the word?

Well, The Sun reports that Moore and the Baggies have been tracking the defender since his senior debut for Watford last year – Sesay came through the Hornets academy before securing a move to West Sussex outfit Crawley Town, where he has thoroughly impressed.

The 20-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and chalked up one assist in his maiden season at Broadfield Stadium.

Crawley are currently 18th in League Two and they may struggle to keep hold of the young prospect, particularly if they are to be relegated from the EFL this season. If the minnows cannot evade the drop, West Brom will be waiting to snap Sesay up.

Ideal replacement for Holgate

Mason Holgate has been a fixture in the Baggies starting XI since signing on loan from Everton in January, playing the full 90 minutes in every Championship clash he has featured in.

While the young Englishman has been utilised solely as a right-back since his arrival at The Hawthorns, he is also equally capable playing at the heart of defence – he shares this with Sesay, who is comfortable being deployed all across the back-line.

Moore’s desire to find a winning formula for his side has seen him try a number of different formations, including a 3-1-4-2 – although that yielded little success. Whether or not the Baggies boss decides to dip his toes back into such an approach or stick with his current 4-3-3, Sesay’s versatility would be a huge asset if he can be developed into a Championship standard player.

Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…

As it stands, Holgate is set return to Goodison Park at the end of the season and so West Brom’s interest in Sesay – a very similar player – suggests that the Midlands club feel there is little chance of Holgate remaining at The Hawthorns beyond the 2018/19 campaign.

Lewis Holtby is the man to cure Rangers’ creativity issues

Rangers fans haven’t had much to shout about recently as their silverware pursuit appears to have come to an end, with Celtic running away with the title and Aberdeen advancing in the Scottish Cup.

However, Steven Gerrard will be desperate to finish strongly ahead of what could be a busy summer transfer window for the Light Blues, with a number of improvements required.

Interestingly, it appears as if they already have their eye on Lewis Holtby.ÂThe Daily RecordÂclaim sources in Germany have touted the potential for a deal, while Goal reporter Ronan Murphy supported the rumour on Twitter.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man now plays his football over in Germany for Hamburg, but his contract is set to expire in the summer transfer window which appears to have caught the attention of Rangers.

Sadly, Gerrard has already stated (as per The Scottish Sun) that he regrets not signing a creative playmaker, so it would make perfect sense for Mark Allen to secure the services of the 28-year-old who still has a lot to offer.

Alfredo Morelos has been excellent this season, scoring 29 goals and assisting 11, but sticking a creative midfielder like Holtby in behind him could take him up a level as he’d constantly thread balls through, which would provide him with more opportunities to boost his goals tally as he’s had to make a large amount of goals for himself this season.

It’s safe to say that the Light Blues would be delighted if the German joined in the summer as he’s exactly the kind of player they’ve been after, with the ability to create in the final third. He’s produced a respectable five goals and six assists in the current campaign and he has a lot of experience which could come in handy at Ibrox.

Rangers already have a number of young players at their disposal but it has been some of their more experienced heads that have impressed this season, including Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor.ÂSo, bringing Holtby to Glasgow would make a lot of sense, and the fact that he’s available on a free makes it even better.

Rangers fans, do you think Holtby could play a big part at Ibrox next season? Join the discussion by commenting down below!

Everton: Marcel Brands might be being totally irresponsible

It’s clear Everton need another big summer transfer window to reach Europe, right? There’s been lots of positive talk from the board, but the on-pitch performances haven’t lived up to expectations, and by the sound of the club’s director of football, this summer might not either.

Marcel Brands has seemed to distance himself from the prospect of signing a much-needed forward when the season’s over, telling the Liverpool Echo: “I think we are a very, very lucky club in England that we have three players with great potential who are just 21-years-old,”

On the impact a new signing might have on he said Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Ademola Lookman’s development, he added: “If I bring in a new player, a huge striker or a name, should I destroy one of them? It is also my goal to protect those boys. Everyone agrees with me that they have great potential and a great future.”

That doesn’t sound too promising for Evertonians hoping for more attacking muscle next season. It’s true those players are young and can develop into better players for the future, but Everton need results now, too. It’s important a striker in the prime of his career can lead the young players to succeed and take some weight off their shoulders.

The pressure is high now because big wigs at the club have talked up what a great future they envisage for the team. There’s a new stadium being built, money being pumped in during previous summers, and an attacking manager hired to create an identity. To make a team for the future, you must set the benchmark and begin achieving successes along the way.

These young players can’t be expected to be world-beaters already, but, as long as they’re in the starting line-up, they’re held to the same standards of any other aged player that wears the historic blue kit. It’s unfair and frankly irresponsible to not have more experienced players used to the pressure around them.

If Everton are to become an established European side, they must create a balance of youth and experience. At the moment, that simply isn’t present and it’s reflecting in their inconsistency.

Everton fans, how do you think Marco Silva should improve his squad in the summer? Join the discussion by commenting below.

Could Tyler Roberts follow in footsteps of Marcelo Bielsa’s success stories?

[ad_pod ]

Tyler Roberts has been one the surprise packages of the season at Leeds United. Not only has the 20-year-old shocked supporters with the standard of his performances, but he has thrived away from his customary centre-forward position in the enganche role which has largely been occupied by Samu Saiz and Pablo Hernandez.

Yet more reason for the media to salivate over the Argentine, as if any more were necessary.

A pair of assists were provided for Patrick Bamford against West Brom last Friday, with a delicate flick of the boot providing the killer ball to put Leeds 2-0 up shortly before the break and a bulldozing dribble through the heart of the Baggies defence preceding the killer third.

In a season which has hosted Roberts’ rise to prominence alongside the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton, eulogisers have naturally hailed Bielsa’s influence in their collective development.

But this trend is far from surprising given Bielsa’s history in the game. A handful of talents in the Premier League played under the Leeds boss during the formative stages of their careers, and we’re here to show how exposure to his widely-celebrated philosophy can ultimately lay some vital foundations needed for a big future in the game.

Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City’s majestic central defender hailed Bielsa during an interview with The Times earlier this season.

“Without him, I might not be where I am today. It was Bielsa who gave me my first steps in the [Spanish] top flight, and so I owe him a lot. I’m very grateful to him and very aware of exactly what he did for me.”

It takes genuine bravery for a manager to trust in a ball-playing central defender at an age when they are bound to make glaring errors. Bielsa, though, as Laporte has stated, is “not cut from the usual cloth.”

The Athletic Bilbao prodigy was playing 90 minutes in La Liga on a semi-regular basis aged just 18, starting 14 times in the 2012/13 season, but his exposure to elite standard football at such a tentative age clearly served him well.

Bielsa will look at Laporte’s development with immense pride. The 24-year-old has grown into a complete defender, and his performances will undoubtedly play a defining role in the extent of City’s success this season.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Theo Ogden found two rebelious Leeds fans in the home end at Loftus Road in QPR’s 2-1 FA Cup win. Find out what happened next in the video below…

Michy Batshuayi

Bielsa’s time at Marseille happened to coincide with the arrival of one of Belgium’s brightest young talents. Batshuayi’s maiden campaign in France was representative of his overall promise at that age, with a return of nine goals to show from just six starts in Ligue 1.

Admittedly, Bielsa was a little reluctant to fully blood Batshuayi into the starting XI with Andre-Pierre Gignac offering experience at the spearhead of the attack.

But the summer acquisition did come off the bench a further 20 times to supplement his opportunities from the start, and Bielsa’s handling of the complete forward provided him with the platform to thrive in the following season, with 23 goals and 10 assists eventually convincing Chelsea to sign him the following summer.

A player who combines power with technique and neat interplay, the fruits of Bielsa’s labour clearly rubbed off on the Crystal Palace loanee.

Mario Lemina

Lemina is one of the most outspoken admirers of his former manager, per So Foot.

“The first year with Elie Baup was complicated but the next one with Marcelo Bielsa was magnificent. We discovered another OM, more spectacular. With the coach, I learned a lot. It’s really interesting to work under him. When he left, it was a shock for me and that’s what made me want to go.”

The Gabon international is yet to fulfil what is no doubt a huge level of potential, but it’s clear from his quotes that he felt happy and well-educated under Bielsa.

Perhaps a reunion with his former boss could be on the cards if Leeds win promotion to the Premier League.

Is Roberts the next success story?

The aforementioned players are examples of some of the brightest young talents who were privileged enough to play under Bielsa during the early stages of their careers.

It’s clear to see from their career paths that exposure to his methods, philosophy and captivating personality can contribute to a huge future in the game.

For Roberts, a strong contender for Leeds’ breakthrough talent of the season, he has been fortunate to receive the same education.

The Wales international is in esteemed company, but the signs are there to suggest he may not be completely out of his depth in a bracket alongside the likes of Batshuayi and Lemina in four years’ time.

Another Bielsa success story could be in the making.

Dean Ashton gives verdict on Leeds’ automatic promotion chances

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s chances of achieving automatic promotion to the Premier League this season received a boost on Monday night as the Sheffield derby at Hillsborough ended goalless, meaning that Sheffield United didn’t leapfrog the Whites into second place in the Championship.

However, there are still plenty of games left to play and things remain tight at the top, so success is far from certain for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Former West Ham United striker and EFL on Quest pundit Dean Ashton believes that one flaw in the Elland Road club’s squad could hold them back.

Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…

What he said

Speaking to Football League World, the pundit said of Leeds’ chances: “I wouldn’t say they are favourites for the top two just yet because Sheffield United and Norwich haven’t shown any particular weaknesses…The only worry I would have for them at the moment is that Kemar Roofe is out with injury. He was out of form before getting sidelined and that is a worry. Norwich have Teemu Pukki and Sheffield United have Billy Sharp and their goals can be hard to keep with.”

Working with what they have

The Whites certainly lack a truly prolific goalscorer. Sharp has racked up 22 league goals so far this season, whilst Pukki leads the division with 24 strikes. Meanwhile, Leeds’ top scorer, Roofe, has only notched 14 times in the Championship.

However, Bielsa’s side generally spread the goals around well, with Patrick Bamford, Pablo Hernandez, Ezgjan Alioski and Mateusz Klich all chipping in this season. What’s more, Leeds can get away with being slightly less prolific as they’re so solid defensively.

By sticking to the principles of Bielsa’s system, and keeping faith in what they have, Leeds can still scrap their way to the top flight even without one of the biggest-hitting strikers in the division. That being said, in a run-in as tight as this, a few scrappy goals from a natural predator can make all the difference.

Southampton: Club must keep Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary’s, even if they are relegated

It has been quite a six months at Southampton, hasn’t it?

After a dismal start to the season under Mark Hughes which saw the club pick up just nine points from their opening fourteen fixtures, owner Katharina Liebherr decided enough was enough and sacked the Welshman.

With the Saints languishing in the bottom three of the Premier League, it was a daunting task for any manager to come in and transform their fortunes, let alone someone who had no previous experience of working in English football.

Yet in the form of Ralph Hasenhuttl, the club found a charismatic individual who has given the supporters real hope of survival this season, banishing the doom and gloom that had previously surrounded the St Mary’s before his appointment in December.

Now 16 games into his Southampton reign, he has inspired his side to victories over the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur whilst also accumulating a total of 21 points. However, despite a promising start to life in charge on the south coast, the 51-year-old knows that his club are by no means out of the woods and face several crucial fixtures in the coming weeks to secure Premier League football next season.

In retrospect, Saints fans would probably have wanted Hasenhuttl to have taken over at the club at the start of the current campaign as based on the average points that he is recuperating per game (1.24), they would be on course for a total of 47, which would have seen them finish well clear of the bottom three.

When you combine this particular statistic with the clear improvement that players such as James Ward-Prowse and Yan Valery have made under the guidance of the Austrian then it becomes clear that Southampton should keep the faith in their manager regardless of how the season ends.

If they do end up being relegated to the Championship, they should follow the example set by Newcastle United who held fire on Rafael Benitez despite going down and later reaped the rewards by achieving promotion at the first attempt of asking.

What do you think Southampton fans? Should Hasenhuttl stay at St Mary’s even if your side are relegated? Or is he not the right man to lead the club forward? Let us know below.
