Tottenham fans drool over Dean Henderson transfer link

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left drooling after Ricky Sacks relayed a Football London report saying Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson could be an option for Spurs this summer.

The Football London story was talking about the Hugo Lloris dilemma manager Jose Mourinho has ahead of the summer transfer window, given he is beginning to make more and more errors.

The report brought up Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana who has already been linked with a move to north London, before it went on to say that Henderson and Burnley stopper Nick Pope could be potential options nearer to home.

Indeed, the former’s future at Old Trafford may well be up in the air at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old is currently enjoying a second successful loan spell with Sheffield United in the Premier League, but the Blades have no option to buy with the goalkeeper signing a new contract with the Red Devils before moving to Bramall Lane on a temporary basis last summer.

The potential issue is whether the 6 foot 2 goalkeeper would be willing to sit on the bench for his parent club, with David De Gea surely unlikely to relinquish his number one spot anytime soon.

Should he be promised first-team football by Spurs and Mourinho for example, he and United may well be left with a decision to make.

Spurs supporters on Twitter certainly seem thrilled by the link to the 6 foot 2 star, although some aren’t sure whether they could actually sign him.

Here is a selection of the reaction…

Celtic must think twice before letting Kristoffer Ajer go

According to Calcio Mercato, Serie A giants Milan have earmarked Kristoffer Ajer as a potential transfer target for the summer.

What’s the word?

The Norway international has been an ever-present for Celtic this season, making an impressive 49 appearances across all competitions – in fact, he has only failed to complete the full 90 minutes in the top-flight on four occasions.

And as per Italian publication Calcio Mercato, Milan are targeting defenders who are physically strong and with a sense of leadership, and feel Ajer “embodies these characteristics”.

The report further adds that the 21-year-old is “highly appreciated by the Rossoneri scouts, but Celtic has specified that he will not make any discounts”.

Think twice

The Hoops have lost some crucial players from their back-line in recent years, not least players like Virgil van Dijk and even Kieran Tierney last summer.

At 21, Ajer still has plenty of time to really grow into his role at Celtic Park, and the fact he has been a mainstay of their team this season shows just how highly Lennon values him.

Back in February, the Celtic boss even lauded him for being a “model of consistency” all season, whilst just last summer he waxed lyrical about Ajer’s abilities.

He said: “Kris is a fantastic player and has pretty much played every minute for me. He has been outstanding, and we have high hopes for him. Kris wants to improve, he is a regular international now, and you have to remember how young he is. He is athletic, good on the ball, good in the air and is an intelligent boy. Kris has all the strings to his bow, he is a real specimen at 21.”

It’s fair to say that Celtic still haven’t yet seen the best of the 6 foot 5 Ajer, and if they have hopes of doing matching their domestic success in Europe, then keeping a hold of highly-rated players will be important. It’s exactly why Peter Lawwell should be very wary of cashing in on a player who still has a lot more to give.

Total Duds: Vincent Janssen was one of Daniel Levy’s biggest mistakes at Tottenham

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

Tottenham have not always had the best of luck in the transfer market.

The spending after the sale of Gareth Bale is likely to be a period that many Spurs fans would rather forget. With the money from the Wales international’s departure to Real Madrid, the likes of Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Vlad Chiriches made the switch to White Hart Lane – only Christian Eriksen has proven to be worth every single penny.

There have been other mistakes since then as well, such as the signing of Vincent Janssen. It is fair to say the Netherlands international had a torrid time in north London.

The Lilywhites paid £18.6m to AZ Alkmaar for him in 2016, and at the time it was a move that made perfect sense. He had just come off the back of a season in which he scored 32 goals in all competitions, including 27 in 34 league matches, and at the age of just 22, he was one for the future.

However, it is fair to say his time at the club was nothing short of a disaster. In his first campaign, he managed just six goals in 38 matches in all competitions, with four of those coming in the domestic cups. He would make just one appearance for the side in the 2017/18 campaign, joining Fenerbahce on loan in September of that term.

After five goals in 17 appearances in Turkey, he returned to England, but would play just three more matches for Spurs. Last summer, he joined Mexican side Monterrey for £6.3m, meaning Tottenham made a loss of £12.3m in three years and just 42 matches as Janssen completely flopped.

Daniel Levy has a reputation for being a sturdy negotiator, but this is one transfer he got terribly wrong.

West Ham fans still want Abraham signed

Amid consistent transfer links to Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, with the most recent claim coming from reliable source ExWHUemployee – who claimed he is someone West Ham ‘will look at’ in the summer – plenty of Irons fans still want to see the Englishman come through the doors at the London Stadium.

As he is reportedly at the centre of a contract dispute in west London, the Hammers have very recently been linked with Abraham by numerous outlets, with Ex, Eurosport’s Dean Jones and the Daily Star all saying that West Ham hold an interest in the 23-year-old.

The forward looks like a potentially serious transfer target for West Ham – and it’s safe to say that many supporters want to see him come through the door.

Flocking to Twitter in full debate over Abraham, one supporter claimed he would be a ‘fantastic signing’, and it’s hard to argue with that assessment given he bagged 15 goals in 25 Premier League starts last season (WhoScored).

Plans afoot for Caribbean Premier League

Michael Muirhead, the CEO of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), has said that negotiations are on track for staging the inaugural Caribbean Premier League, a tournament which could replace the regional T20 competition in January next year.”The negotiations are going on to bring on stream the Caribbean Premier League, and this would be a franchise tournament,” Muirhead said. “The West Indies Cricket Board is negotiating the rights, and after this it will be handed to a private promoter who has shown interest in staging the league.”As it stands now, seven Caribbean teams will play a regional T20 which begins on January 6 in Trinidad and Tobago. Muirhead maintained that the commercial league may replace the regional tournament.”It might mean that the regional T20 cricket tournament that is now being played might have to be done away with. This would mean that the franchise team would now go on to represent the region at the Champions League tournament on an annual basis,” he said.Muirhead also said that during his tenure, he hoped to resolve differences between the WICB and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA).”I think with the temperament that I possess, I will be able to bring the parties closer together. Issues with WIPA don’t have to be contentious, and at the end of my tenure I think WIPA would become a less contentious issue,” he said.”Both bodies have to work together to get things right, and it will take compromise from both ends. We will sit and negotiate fairly while achieving our own individual ideals, and I am confident things would work out.”

Nicolas Otamendi almost cost Manchester City last night

Pep Guardiola’s return to Germany certainly wasn’t as routine as he had hoped following an incredible 3-2 victory over former rivals Schalke.

Indeed, it took City until the dying minutes of the game to rescue all three points and save face against a far weaker (on paper at least) Schalke side.

Manchester City started the game in typically explosive style.

A well worked free-kick routine saw Aguero’s first effort of the game saved in theatrical style by the flying hands of German stopper Ralf Fahrmann, before the latter’s dangerous pass was dispossessed on the outside of the area and placed easily into the open net by the awaiting Argentine.

VAR had its first decision of the game when the ball was ruled to have struck the arm of Otamendi in the box. Penalty to Schalke duly despatched by Nabil Bentaleb.

The hosts continued to pressure and saw their efforts pay off when a freekick floated into the area saw one of their players pulled to the ground. Second penalty of the half, second goal for Bentaleb.

Nicolas Otamendi was shown his first red of his Manchester City career in the 68th minute after an unnecessary foul from behind making his side’s task all the more difficult.

Despite their best efforts, it would take until the dying minutes of the game before Guardiola’s men restored normality. Substitute and former Schalke player Leroy Sane unleashed an absolute peach of a free-kick to level things up before Ederson’s Hail Mary found the feet of Sterling who duly dispatched.

You’ve got to say that Nicolas Otamendi really let his team down.

The penalty wasn’t really his fault, but the second yellow card was avoidable, and he’s given his manager a bit of a headache going into the next fixture because of it.

A special mention should also go out to Fernandinho, as well, who really looked off the boil compared to his usual self.

His tug on Sane in the box to give away the second penalty was silly and, as an experienced player, the Brazilian should have known better not to make needless contact in the box. Especially with VAR on the prowl.

Both Jamie Shackleton and Luke Ayling in Leeds lineup to play Boro, fans react

[ad_pod ]

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay, covering Marcelo Bielsa’s press conference on Thursday, has given some interesting updates concerning the Argentine’s lineup for the Middlesbrough clash this weekend.

Bielsa’s bizarre strategy of revealing his starting XI during press conferences has come under the spotlight during the Whites’ difficult run of form. Contrary to what many would say though, the 63-year-old feels that doing so gives the opposition no advantage.

Hay reports that the former Lazio manager will give both Jamie Shackleton and Luke Ayling the nod on Saturday at the Riverside. The former has deputised for the latter at right-back while he was out with a knee injury earlier this season.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

This indicates that Ayling will slot into the back four while Shackleton will be returning to his preferred role in midfield, likely at the expense of Mateusz Klich, who has hit a poor run of form and is also an injury doubt.

He isn’t the only one, though; The Whites have lost to Stoke and title-rivals Norwich in recent weeks and have consequently surrendered their advantage to the Canaries, who now lead.

The six-pointer with Boro this weekend is a must-win for Bielsa’s men, who risk falling further down the table if they drop points to another promotion rival.

The Elland Road faithful are looking forward to it, though, with the knowledge that 19-year-old Shackleton will be returning to the midfield…

Daniel Caligiuri could prove to be a hero for Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham

West Ham might fancy a busy transfer deadline day after securing the future of Marko Arnautovic.

Speculation has raged on all month long with the Austrian international subject to significant interest from China. An unnamed club were believed to have offered upwards of £35m for the former Stoke man and his future seemed unclear. However, the forward eventually committed his long-term future to the Hammers by penning a new contract.

Arnautovic’s renewal is massive for Manuel Pellegrini who is hoping for a late charge for Europe in his remaining fixtures. Adding some more quality to the squad could prove to be vital in bringing European nights to the London Stadium.

One man Pellegrini could target is Schalke utility man – Daniel Caligiuri. Valued at £6.75m by Transfermarkt, the Italian has been one of the most consistent performers in the Bundesliga during recent seasons. Once again, the 31-year-old has been in fine form for his side, he has been a shining light in a dismal Bundesliga campaign so far.

Caligiuri would prove to be a useful option for the former Manchester City boss to have at his disposal. The former Wolfsburg man is comfortable at right-back or right wing back as well as the right of midfield. The German-born winger has helped his side’s cause with two goals and four assists so far this season and would be the ideal long-term replacement for Pablo Zabaleta on the right flank.

Luring the versatile defender to London on deadline day could prove to be a wise move by the Hammers.

West Ham fans, thoughts?

Everton learn asking price for Michy Batshuayi

[ad_pod ]

Everton are attempting to sign Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea and have learned that they will have to pay £35m for the forward, according to The Guardian.

What’s the story?

Everton’s problems in the final third this season have been well documented.

It is true that Richarlison has been a revelation following his summer move from Watford, but the likes of Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have struggled.

The Toffees are said to be keen to sign a new striker on deadline day and according to The Guardian, are attempting to bring Batshuayi to the club.

The Belgium international is back with Chelsea having spent the first half of this season on loan in Spain with Valencia.

It would be fair to say that the 25-year-old struggled at the Mestalla, managing just one league goal during a disappointing loan spell.

Batshuayi’s Chelsea record is 19 goals in 53 appearances, which is not exactly terrific, but he did score goals on loan at Borussia Dortmund last term.

Should Everton move for the striker?

Batshuayi is certainly capable of being a success at Everton, but £35m is a lot of money for a player who has not been in good form this season.

A move for the Belgian on transfer deadline day does make sense for Everton, but the Toffees must attempt to negotiate a lower price.

According to The Guardian, West Ham United had wanted to take Batshuayi on loan, but Chelsea are keen on a permanent sale, with Everton seemingly the only serious contenders at this stage of the transfer window.

The Londoners are in a strong negotiating position though, considering that Batshuayi still has more than two years left to run on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

If the asking price stays the same then Everton should dodge a move, but anything around the £27m mark should be seriously considered by the Toffees.
