Baroda and Railways locked in battle royale

Chasing a target of 223 for an outright win, Railways were91/4 at close of play on the fourth day of the Ranji Trophyfinal played at the Gujarat State Fertilizer CorporationGround, Baroda on Sunday

Santhosh S22-Apr-2001Chasing a target of 223 for an outright win, Railways were91/4 at close of play on the fourth day of the Ranji Trophyfinal played at the Gujarat State Fertilizer CorporationGround, Baroda on Sunday.Baroda started the day at their overnight score of 183/2.Satyajit Parab who was just two runs away from his century, got to the landmark without much fuss. Parab and Jacob Martinshowed scant respect for the railways bowling as they wentabout scoring runs freely. The two batsmen put together a partnership of 117 runs for thethird wicket. Parab was the third batsman to be dismissed, stumped by Abhay Sharma off the bowling of Murali Kartik. Hemade 141 runs off 265 balls with the help of 14 boundaries. Itwas a remarkable innings from Parab, given the fact that hewas given out caught behind off the very first ball of thematch.Tushar Arothe (21) paid the price for his flamboyance as heholed out to Bangar at long off , TP Singh claiming thewicket. Abhay Sharma took four catches behind the wicket asBaroda kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Zaheer Khan(19) helped Martin add 28 runs for the ninth wicket. Barodawere in search of valuable runs and Martin was closing on tohis hundred. The injured Rakesh Patel joined his skipper in the middle andwas gifted a shocker of a decision, given out caught at sillypoint. There was enough daylight between the bat and ball tosuggest that the decision was incorrect. Martin was strandedunbeaten on 87 (8 fours) and Baroda were all out for 373. TPSingh (4/87) and Sanjay Bangar (3/94) shared the bowlinghonours.Railways were set a reasonable target of 223 and with RakeshPatel not taking the field because of an injury, Baroda had tobank on their international player Zaheer Khan. Railways gotoff to a good start as Amit Pagnis and Sanjay Bangar kept themedium pacers at bay.For Baroda there was mixed emotions as the news trickled inabout the selection of the national probables. Nayan Mongiawas dropped, even ignoring his 181 & 53 against Orissa in theRanji semi-finals. The good news was that of the selection ofRakesh Patel who was been sorely missed in the middle.Harvinder Singh, the Railways medium pacer too found a placein the Indian probables. The introduction of spin from both ends on a track that isoffering a lot of turn and bounce to the slower bowlers didchange the course. Pagnis (31) gave a simple return catch toAjit Bhoite. In the following over Bangar (7) went back to anarm ball from Valmik Buch to be bowled.TP Singh (5) who played well in the first innings failed toimpress as he went for a big shot and skied an easy catch toZaheer Khan off the bowling of Bhoite. Skipper Abhay Sharma(17) played positively, striking the ball cleanly, but wasfound wanting as he edged a ball from Buch, CC Williamsstanding at gully took a one-handed catch, diving low to hisleft. There were a couple of catches dropped towards the end of theday which might cost Baroda dearly if Railways were to knockoff the 132 runs tomorrow. Yerre Goud (17*) and SudhirWankhede (11*) are at the crease. With the pitch taking turn,Buch and Bhoite could make life difficult for the Railwayswith the noisy close-in fielders going up in appeal for anypossible dismissal. The match could go either way tomorrow andthe team who would deal with the pressure better will emergeas the Ranji Trophy champions.

Palace must play Jean-Philippe Mateta

With a host of first-team regulars set to become free agents over the coming months, serious injuries to young stars mounting up and Wilfried Zaha leaving the door open to a summer exit once again, the task facing Roy Hodgson’s successor at Crystal Palace is already mounting up.

The Eagles’ chairman Steve Parish is expected to provide some funds in order to rebuild large sections of the playing squad, but it’s still expected to be a precarious time for the south London outfit as they enter the post-Hodgson era.

However, one man who could help Palace enjoy a smooth transitional period is already at the club. Jean-Philippe Mateta arrived on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy back in January, although he failed to find his best form at Selhurst Park in 2020/21.

After impressing at parent club Mainz in the Bundesliga, bagging seven goals in 15 league appearances for the relegation-threatened outfit, Mateta earned himself a move to the Premier League, and big things were expected of the 23-year-old.

Despite his sizeable reputation and Palace’s mediocre form, the former France Under-21 international found himself restricted to just two starts in England’s top-flight in the second half of the recently-concluded campaign.

Mateta only managed to score a solitary goal in his 218 minutes of Premier League action under Hodgson, but his impressive performances at Mainz suggests that whoever replaces the former England boss could have a serious talent at their disposal.

With Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend amongst the players approaching the end of their current contracts at Selhurst Park, and Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi expected to return to his parent club, a gaping void in the capital club’s forward line is set to appear ahead of next season.

If the new Palace boss can unlock Mateta’s potential and extract the sort of displays that earned him a move to England in the first place, then life without their old guard will be something the club’s supporters can look forward to rather than fear.

He has the ability to become the Eagles’ new poster boy but he’s yet to be given a fair chance in south London. The next Palace regime must be brave enough to unleash the £13.5-rated beast (as per Transfermarkt) next season.

Bihar turn the tables on Assam

Tottenham fans slam Eric Dier

After Tottenham Hotspur’s ambitions to qualify for the Champions League took a major blow this afternoon, succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at Leeds United, many Lilywhites supporters proceeded to take aim at defender Eric Dier.

The 27-year-old, playing in front of England boss Gareth Southgate, endured a horrible afternoon in Yorkshire as Spurs take a big dent in their quest to qualify for Europe.

Dier, up against Leeds ace Patrick Bamford, was given a tough task right from the off and was at fault for his goal late in the first half.

The centre-back was caught ball watching, with the Whites striker promptly nipping in ahead of him to gift Leeds a 2-1 advantage (football.london).

Rodrigo eventually sealed a 3-1 victory for the home side as Spurs watched on, and a frustrating afternoon is perhaps encapsulated by what these supporters thought of Dier’s display.

Having earned a 6.4 match rating, losing the ball 12 times and getting beaten in the majority of his aerial duels (SofaScore) – it’s safe to say the numbers back up a regrettable afternoon for the defender.

Here’s how Tottenham fans rated his performance at Leeds.

Tottenham fans hammer Dier

Yves Bissouma: Should Spurs sign him?

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly one of the teams keen on signing Yves Bissouma this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Daily Star, who claim the North London outfit have made inquiries but it appears their arch-rivals, Arsenal, are the front-runners to secure the Brighton and Hove Albion star.

The 24-year-old still has two years on his current contract at the Seagulls and is valued at around £30m.

Fellow Premier League sides Everton and West Ham United are also mooted with interest.

Imagine him & Hojbjerg

Spurs are currently managerless but any new appointment is set to have multiple midfield options at his disposal, ranging from summer signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele.

But it is the Denmark international that has been a constant presence in the starting XI, playing every minute (3,060) of every league game this term – the only outfield player to do so.

Interestingly, Bissouma has exceeded the returns of Hojbjerg, who could be considered one of Spurs’ players of the season come the end of the campaign.

As per WhoScored, the Brighton midfielder has managed more tackles (2.8 vs 2.6), more interceptions (1.7 vs 1.3), and has committed fewer fouls (1.5 vs 1.8) per game in the Premier League than the £15m summer arrival.

And unlike Hojbjerg, he offers far more going forward, which means he could be the perfect foil rather than a direct replacement or alternative in that role.

His 1.2 shots per outing is a better return than every single Spurs player barring the obvious two in Heung-min Son (two) and Harry Kane (1.4), whilst he’s not quite at Ndombele’s dribbling ability, managing only 1.5 successful attempts per game, he is a hard man to dispossess, having averaged only 0.8 dispossessions compared to the Frenchman’s 1.1 times per game.

Dale Stephens, a former teammate of Bissouma’s on the south coast, gave a glowing review about this aspect of his game to reporters in 2019.

“He’s got the ability of perhaps a winger playing in central midfield with the way he can go past players,” revealed the Burnley midfielder. “His feet are incredible and I’m sure he’s going to get better and better. He’s got everything you need to be a top player.”

The Mali international has also been dubbed a “wonderful talent” by ex-Seagulls boss Chris Hughton and described as “very skilful” by his old Lille colleague Lebo Mothiba.

It remains to be seen if Daniel Levy can afford to stump up around £30m for anyone this summer but if he can, then it should absolutely be on a player of Bissouma’s calibre.

Just imagine him and Hojbjerg in the heart of the engine room.

That would surely be enough to tempt anyone into the managerial vacancy – maybe even a certain Graham Potter? Only time will tell.

West Ham fans ecstatic over Lingard news

It’s no secret that manager David Moyes wishes to make Lingard a permanent West Ham player, with club insiders C&H recently revealing it is among his top priorities along with a new striker.

Now, bringing a development, transfer insider Jones has provided a very promising update with his information.

As well as the transfer fee expected to be around £25m, Jones says that Lingard is also likely to join on a salary at around £100,000-per-week.

Given his sensational form this season, scoring nine goals and three assists in 13 Premier League starts for the Irons (WhoScored), it’s little wonder supporters have flocked to this latest Lingard update whilst calling it ‘brilliant’.

Leeds suffer Raphinha blow before Brighton

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that Raphinha is set to miss the clash against Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the story?

The Brazilian limped off the pitch in the 2-1 over Manchester City last month and has since missed the games against Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

Ahead of the Yorkshire side’s clash against the Seagulls today, Bielsa delivered a rather worrying update on the winger and the injury that he sustained at the Etihad Stadium.

He said: “More than serious is more difficult to give a diagnostic of and difficult to give return date. A hit which created an internal hematoma and until that hematoma disappears it causes pain and inhibits mobility.

“This can be resolved quickly or take longer. When the hematoma reduces and the player is no longer in pain he will return quickly. The impression is that we are in the final stages until he is finally healed.”

Bielsa surely devastated

Make no mistake about it, Bielsa will be sickened over missing his chief talisman from this season once again. The summer signing has been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League with the way he has adjusted to life in English football, scoring six times and providing a further six assists in the top flight.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Raphinha’s displays had Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford hailing about him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace earlier in the campaign, with the Englishman saying on Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.

“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”

While it is certainly only a small sample size, in the three games in which Raphinha has not featured, Leeds have yet to win, including a 4-1 defeat against Leicester early in the season.

Being without him once again will come as a blow to Bielsa and a setback to his side’s chances of avenging the home defeat by Brighton back in January.

Meanwhile, Leeds can finally bin this “liability”…
