Asif Ahmed smashes ton as Dhaka Metro stay top

A round-up of the sixth round of matches in the National Cricket League 2011-12

Mohammad Isam01-Dec-2011Dhaka Metropolis regained top spot in the National Cricket League after their sixth-round win over Rangpur, by nine wickets at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan Ground in Savar. It was Asif Ahmed who set up the victory with an aggressive 152 that took him just over three-and-a-half hours to compile, and included 22 boundaries and a six. He shared a 225-run second-wicket stand with his batting hero Mohammad Ashraful, who made 71. Shamsur Rahman and Tasamul Haque also made healthy contributions in Dhaka Metro’s 518 that went past Rangpur’s strong first innings score by 164 runs. Left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny’s six-for sunk the northerners in the second innings and gave Dhaka a meagre 30-run chase which they completed on the final day.Khulna, who now trail Dhaka Metro by 7.22 points, crushed Chittagong by eight wickets in Jessore thanks mainly to seamer Al-Amin Hossain’s twelve wickets. He first ripped through the Chittagong lower order in the first innings, in which they scored just 200 runs, before leaving an even bigger impression in the second innings. Al-Amin finished with 7 for 36 in the second innings, with Chittagong getting bowled out for 144 runs on the third day. Nazmus Sadat’s quick half-century saw Khulna home inside three days.Rajshahi moved into the top four through an easy win over Dhaka, by nine wickets at the Abdur Rab Serniabad Stadium in Barisal. Winless Dhaka were shot out for 131 twice, a display that sums up the season for the biggest division in the country. Rajshahi made just 214 in their first innings, with Hamidul Islam scoring 57, but the defending champions’ bowling attack, led by left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib and seamer Delwar Hossain, ensured the fourth-innings target was a modest one and Rajshahi chased it easily.Sylhet are also in the top four, after a four-wicket win over Barisal at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. In a close game, Barisal’s Iftekhar Nayeem hammered 132 and 77 in each innings but it was not enough for the perennial underachievers. Sylhet banked largely on their seamers and Tapash Baisya and Abu Jayed took five wickets each in the first innings. Later it was left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jnr who took a seven-for to bowl Barisal out for 199 runs in the second innings. Nadif Chowdhury played an important hand as Sylhet chased down the 186-run target on the final day.

Auckland face weakened Kolkata

ESPNcricinfo previews the Champions League Twenty20 qualifier between Kolkata Knight Riders and Auckland in Hyderabad

The Preview by Nikita Bastian18-Sep-2011Match factsAuckland v Kolkata Knight Riders, September 19
Start time 20.00 (14.30 GMT)
Yusuf Pathan poses a threat for Auckland with bat and ball•AFPBig PictureKolkata Knight Riders finished fourth in IPL 2011 and, having come to the qualifiers with the least favourable result in their domestic league among the participating teams, will be eager to prove they belong with the Twenty20 elite. Injuries to their captain Gautam Gambhir and Eoin Morgan, and Brad Haddin’s unavailability – he’s with the Australia Test squad in Sri Lanka – will affect the quality and balance of the side. Even so, a team featuring the likes of Jacques Kallis, Yusuf Pathan and Brett Lee should post a stiff challenge.Auckland, New Zealand’s champions, have reached the finals of the domestic Twenty20 competition in four seasons out of six. Batsmen Jimmy Adams, Colin Munro, Lou Vincent and Colin de Grandhomme were solid in this year’s HRV Cup campaign. In Chris Martin, Kyle Mills, Daryl Tuffey and Andre Adams the team enjoys vast international experience on the pace front. Areas of concern would be a lack of match practice – it’s the winter offseason in New Zealand – and minor shoulder and dental issues for Martin and Tuffey. The format of the qualifiers – two pools of three teams each, with the top three overall going through – demands the sides win two out of two to ensure they make the main-draw.Team newsJimmy Adams and de Grandhomme are likely to open, with Martin Guptill at No. 3. Auckland were flexible in the HRV Cup, with Vincent, Anaru Kitchen and Munro floating up and down the order. Here, Munro’s HRV form and Robert Quiney’s power-hitting should put them ahead of Kitchen for middle-order spots. With Indian conditions in mind, they might consider going against a traditional strength and playing two spinners, bringing Bruce Martin in to partner Ronnie Hira.

Auckland: (probable) 1 Jimmy Adams, 2 Colin de Grandhomme, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Colin Munro, 5 Robert Quiney/Anaru Kitchen, 6 Gareth Hopkins (capt & wk), 7 Lou Vincent, 8 Ronnie Hira, 9 Andre Adams, 10 Kyle Mills/Daryl Tuffey/Bruce Martin, 11 Chris Martin.Kallis will lead Kolkata in Gambhir’s absence and partner Manvinder Bisla at the top. Manoj Tiwary could be forced to move up a spot to No. 3, unless they promote a bit-hitter up like Yusuf or Ryan ten Doeschate instead. Shakib Al Hasan, whose left-arm spin proved handy in the IPL, will fill the fourth foreign player’s spot.Kolkata Knight Riders: (probable) 1 Jacques Kallis (capt), 2 Manvinder Bisla (wk), 3 Manoj Tiwary, 4 Ryan ten Doeschate, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 Brett Lee, 9 Iqbal Abdulla, 10 L Balaji, 11 Jaidev Unadkat.Watch out for …Andre Adams is coming off a fine English county season and HRV Cup, where he topped the bowling charts for Nottinghamshire and Auckland. Can he reproduce that form at the batting paradise that is the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad?Yusuf Pathan will be smarting after being overlooked for India’s tour of England. Brutal batting aside, he could pose problems with his offspin – Yusuf conceded a miserly 6.10 runs an over in IPL 2011, while claiming 13 wickets to finish second on Kolkata’s wickets table.Key contestIqbal Abdulla v Auckland batsmen: A side from New Zealand might not be completely at ease against spin. Left-armer Iqbal Abdulla proved he could rein in and get past several international batsmen in IPL 2011. The Auckland power-hitters’ response to Abdulla’s wiles promises to be an intriguing battle.Stats & trivia Kolkata were the only team in IPL 2011 to have four bowlers – Abdulla, Yusuf, Rajat Bhatia and Shakib – with an economy rate below 7.00 (25 overs minimum). Colin Munro hit the most sixes (17) in the HRV Cup 2010-11. Quotes”Nothing actually beats playing in India. For some young players, it can be a great experience, [maybe even] a frightening one. The experienced players will help them.”

Goswami leads India to consolation win

India broke their run of defeats by beating New Zealand by three wickets in the 3rd-place playoff of the NatWest Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series at the Rose Bowl

ScorecardJhulan Goswami was the key to India’s victory•Getty ImagesIndia Women broke their run of defeats by beating New Zealand Women by three wickets in the third-place playoff of the NatWest Women’s T20 Quadrangular Series at Aldershot.Having suffered three straight losses during the group stage, India chased down New Zealand’s 95 with a ball to spare. India’s captain Jhulan Goswami was the star, guiding her side home with a cool 33 not out from 28 balls. In a low-scoring encounter, New Zealand were left to rue the 10 wides and three no balls they sent down. The chase was by no means certain when India were reduced to 24 for 3 but Harmanpreet Kaur (14) and Veda Krishnamurthy (15) helped them recover and laid the foundations for Goswami to finish the job.It was an unhappy farewell to Twenty20 cricket for New Zealand’s captain Aimee Watkins. She retires after the upcoming ODIs and had started well at the top of the order, making 15, before becoming the second of two wickets for Amita Sharma. At one stage, when they were 61 for 3, New Zealand looked capable of posting a threatening score but Liz Perry fell for 18 and the lower order couldn’t carry on. Amy Satterthwaite top-scored with 35 but it wasn’t enough.”We needed this win very badly before the start of the ODI series,” Goswami said. “This win will give us much needed momentum because we did not have any so far. I hope we carry this into the ODI series. You must remember that we beat a good side like New Zealand. All four sides are evenly matched, but we had not got up on the victory column as yet.”I told my coach (Anju Jain) that I need to bat up the order and she agreed. If I had not taken the responsibility, the result may have been different. The win came at the right time. You must remember that we were playing for the third place in a world tournament.”Watkins said: “Everyone’s really disappointed. I think the wicket was the reason. We obviously we did not get a big score on the board. While bowling, we were all over the place and we bowled both sides of the wicket. We also gave away too many extras I think.”

Umar Gul focussed on India top order

Umar Gul is the man who operates in the shadows of his more colourful companions of the Pakistani bowling pack. Behind his captain Shahid Afridi among Pakistan’s leading wicket-takers at this World Cup – 14 wickets to Afridi’s 21 – Gul has emerged as the searing inquisitor with the new ball en route to Pakistan’s arrival into the semi-final.It will all come to a head in Mohali on Wednesday when Gul opens the bowling against the strongest batting contingent of the event. It is his first spell that could dictate how the rest of his team’s overs go, but Gul has identified what he needs to do. “The first three wickets in the top-order are very crucial for us. They are depending on the top three. I am looking for these three batsmen.” Now these are words tailor-made for screaming headlines, (“Gul targets top three”, “Gul wants to rip through India top order”) but Gul delivered them as if he were saying something routine. Like telling the physio about his ankles or ordering room service. Were Gul to run into India’s top three in their hotel corridor between now and Wednesday afternoon, there would be handshakes, smiles and pleasant chit-chat. It is a fact that most of the fans on both sides find hard to to digest, particularly two days before the World Cup semi-final that once again sets up one of the most over-heated rivalries in sport.Gul said that given the strength of the Indian batting, the World Cup had taken his bowling to the rhythm it needed at the right time. “Our bowling is very good. Afridi is the leading wicket-taker. I am happy with my performance and form. We have a bit of an advantage with our bowling but I am happy with the way the batsmen played in the quarter-final.” He said that the ideal combination for Wednesday would be the Pakistani bowlers being on top of their game on a friendly wicket, and the batting giving the start like it had against the West Indies. The advantages of working with coach Waqar Younis and assistant coach Aaqib Javed, both fast bowlers of skill and nous, had found strong echoes at the World Cup, according to Gul. “I’ve only fully understood in this World Cup how much help I have got from them.” On the tour to New Zealand, Waqar had informed Gul that he would be bowling with the new ball in the World Cup. “For the last one-and-a-half-years, I wasn’t able to deliver with the new ball because of which I lost my form.” In the last two-three months, however, working with both Waqar and Aaqib, had brought it all back, rhythm, confidence and success. “It’s been like I was bowling in the past, I’ve got my new-ball skills back, which is good for the team.”One of the biggest dilemmas facing Pakistan is whether to play Shoaib Akhtar in what could be one of his last matches. Shoaib was dropped following Pakistan’s defeat to New Zealand but Gul dismissed the talk that he had been omitted because of issues within the team about Shoaib’s conduct. “He was rested after the New Zealand match so that he can focus on his fitness. The way he has been practicing for three days, I hope he will do well.”Shoaib’s partnership with medium-pacer Abdul Razzaq and also the spin option of Mohammed Hafeez at the start has worked well enough, but Gul welcomed the idea of sharing the new ball with Shoaib. Asked whether he personally would like to partner Shoaib against India, Gul said, “Of course. He is our most experienced bowler and he has done very well in the past, especially against India. A little bit of pressure will be lifted off me too if he plays because in the last couple of matches, when Shoaib wasn’t there, all the pressure was on me.”Gul was asked whether he agreed with what MS Dhoni had said about the match actually being bigger than a final. He said, “See, I don’t think Dhoni was talking for himself, he was speaking about the expectations of the Indian people. As a player, no one would say this (a semi-final) is bigger than the final, but every cricketer feels the pressure of their people. We also feel the same pressure – our people also feel that we must beat India in each match. You can say that, if we were speaking not for ourselves, but for Pakistan’s people, then yeah, it’s a final and we will try to win.”A semi-final can’t be bigger than a final but it’s a big match, a high-pressure match.” Whether it is a knockout game or a league game, “any match against India is a big match always,” Gul said, and then, for the first time in the press conference, he smiled. The match was “crucial” for the teams but then Gul moved beyond the cricket. “It brings both countries closer, it’s very good not only for the players but also for both countries.” The prime ministers of both nations seem to agree with the fast bowler. “People from both countries want us to play each other often. Both fans enjoy the cricket because the more we play each other, it’s better. I hope it will be a good match and both countries play well.”He also understood what the consequences would be for the losing semi-finalists. “Always, whether you are the Indian or the Pakistani team, there is pressure. The supporters of both teams absolutely cannot bear a defeat. But we’ve done well in the World Cup, we’ve won six of our seven games. The kind of support we have got from Pakistan, we are very happy. Whether we win or lose is not in our hands, we will try and play good cricket.”The team had not heard of Pakistan interior minister Rehman Malik’s comments about how they would be monitored closely following the spot-fixing controversy. “I am not aware of this until now … We don’t focus on the media; we are focussing only on our cricket. The kind of pressure we have had over the last several months and the way we have handled it, this (the Malik statement) is no pressure at all.”Before he walked off to be with his mates and in the shadows again Gul faced a question about whether he sought stardom of the kind enjoyed by Afridi and Shoaib. He could have given the safe answer but chose not to. He spoke like a young man doing the hard yards in a punishing profession. “It is only natural, every player hopes he will get the kind of fame that Sachin (Tendulkar) or Afridi has. It doesn’t work that way though. Players like that are idols, so Afridi and Shoaib, whether they perform or don’t perform, are idols for the people of Pakistan. They will always remain that way. Sometimes in the heart, yes I do wish that I have the same kind of fans that Afridi and Shoaib have, the same fan following.”Then the fast bowler in him returned and he said, “But even then, I am satisfied with the following I have but I am never satisfied with my performance. If I do well in one game I want to perform better in the next … I always want to try to perform better than the previous time.”No better time to perform than in a World Cup semi-final.Which is why in the evening, like Gul had earlier promised, the Pakistanis turned out for a fielding session under lights, spending an hour. It was meant to assess the dew factor in Mohali and to give their skills one final polish. Pakistan are not practicising tomorrow and this session under lights would be their last hour on the field before they walk out into the sun on Wednesday afternoon.

Kaif, Ojha give Central hope

Uttar Pradesh’s Mohammad Kaif and Madhya Pradesh’ Naman Ojha rescued Central Zone from what was a poor start to their innings in response to East Zone’s 427

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2011
ScorecardUttar Pradesh’s Mohammad Kaif and Madhya Pradesh’ Naman Ojha rescued Central Zone from what was a poor start to their innings in response to East Zone’s 427. Central lost both their openers with the score just four, and then their captain, Rajasthan’s Hrishikesh Kanitkar, was out, leaving them 55 for 3.Kaif and Ojha took their time, taking 37.5 overs for their 114-run unbeaten stand. Kaif, who was recently bought by IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, scored 78, while Ojha reached his half-century by the end of play.Central had made a positive start to the day, taking two quick wickets, but wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha made sure East’s score went pass 400. Saha, who returned from South Africa after the Test series during which he was India’s reserve wicketkeeper, scored 69 and had useful partnerships with lower-order batsmen Ashok Dinda and Iresh Saxena to frustrate Central. Pankaj Singh, whose 43 wickets over the Ranji season were a major factor in Rajasthan winning the trophy, finished with figures of 4 for 126.

Conte must axe Spurs dud vs Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to get back to winning ways as their quest for a top-four finish continues with the visit of Leicester City in the Premier League this afternoon.

Antonio Conte’s men have slipped in recent weeks, drawing 0-0 to Brentford and losing 1-0 to Brighton last time they were in N17. It means arch-rivals Arsenal – who also play later today – are two points clear right now.

Spurs can put the pressure back on the Gunners with a valuable three points against the Foxes, but it won’t be easy as the Europa Conference League semi-finalists always pose a big threat on their day, with players like James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans at Brenden Rodgers’ disposal.

This encounter could be won or lost on the flanks, where the Italian’s system is heavily reliant on the wing-backs contributing both offensively and defensively, and it is also an area of concern in recent matches, too.

Emerson Royal has struggled to adapt to English football for large parts of the 2021/22 campaign, since his move from FC Barcelona in the summer, and with Matt Doherty’s season over through injury, it’s hard to drop him.

But that is indeed what Conte must do, with up-and-coming U23 starlet Marcel Lavinier waiting in the wings. He is also able to utilise a Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn or Dejan Kulusevski in the role if need be.

The visiting Midlands outfit possess some strong players in the wide department too – 42% of their play comes down the Brazilian’s flank, so you can expect Harvey Barnes to be very involved, if not Ademola Lookman.

Over the course of the campaign, supporters have been left frustrated by Emerson’s performances with many describing him as a “liability”, whilst former Lilywhites and Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate once described the 23-year-old as “horrendous”.

The £25m-rated right-back is dribbled past an average of once per game, has been a part of only four clean sheets from 26 league appearances and only wins possession back 0.2 times per outing too, as per SofaScore, which only emphasises his weakness and up against Barnes and co, he could be badly exposed.

As such, the Italian head coach must make a bold and ruthless call to axe Emerson from his starting XI this afternoon. He’s short on options but it would be a telling sign of Emerson’s ability.

Liverpool must axe Mo Salah vs Man Utd

Ahead of a huge game for Liverpool against arch rivals Manchester United tonight, manager Jurgen Klopp must brutally axe “superstar” Mohamed Salah from his starting XI.

On the chalkboard

The Egyptian has had a great season this year, but his performance against Manchester City in the recent FA Cup semi final was far from memorising.

He was hardly in the game and only touched the ball 38 times, which was less than goalkeeper Alisson.

Liverpool are now fortunate enough to be blessed with plenty of options for their front three and we think Klopp should go for a combination that doesn’t include Salah.

With two goals in the cup game against City, Sadio Mane is one of the obvious choices to start, Luis Diaz also deserves to keep his place in the side, and Diogo Jota should be brought in to complete the trio.

Statistics show that Jota can be more of a threat from open play than Salah, with his number of expected non penalty goals higher than the 29-year olds.

Despite the recent poor run of form, Salah’s team mates have leapt to his defence. Andy Robertson praised his work rate as “different class” when speaking to the Athletic.

Jurgen Klopp also spoke after the cup game against City saying that it’s “a completely normal spell” he’s going through and that the goals will eventually come.

Whilst he’s likely to find his form again soon, perhaps a spell out of the team will benefit him? All of Liverpool’s games between now and the end of the season are crucial if they want to beat Manchester City to the title and go all the way in the Champions League and FA Cup.

But derby games against Manchester United are always more difficult. Klopp should play Salah in the easier games until he regains his form or they risk dropping points.

There are also no guarantees that Salah will be a Liverpool player in the future as he’s still not signed a new deal committing his future to the club.

So maybe now is a good time for them to get used to winning without him.

While Anfield may be shocked at such a huge decision, it might just be the right call.

Rangers hit with Aaron Ramsey blow

Rangers have been hit with a fresh injury concern over Ibrox central midfielder Aaron Ramsey…

What’s the latest?

Gio van Bronckhorst has confirmed that the Wales international suffered a hamstring setback in the Scottish Cup win on Sunday.

The on-loan gem was forced off in the first half with the score at 0-0 as Scott Wright was pressed into action earlier than he may have expected, with the Gers going on to win 2-1 in extra time to make it to the final of the competition.

However, they could have to play in the showpiece clash without Ramsey if this knock rules him out for a number of weeks.

Journalist Phil Cadden quoted the head coach as saying: “He had a problem with his hamstring. It didn’t look really good. We will have to assess him, but of course it is a blow for us that he will be out. I don’t know for how long. We just have to assess him on Monday and see where he is.”

Van Bronckhorst will be infuriated

This is a huge blow for the Gers and van Bronckhorst will be furious with this latest injury issue for the midfielder as it has been an almost constant problem for him since arriving in January.

Ramsey has only started four matches in the Premiership and Europa League combined for the club as he has been dealing with his own fitness in recent months. The Juventus man has been unable to string a run of matches together and now looks set for another spell on the sidelines.

Until Rangers know the extent of the damage it is impossible to gauge how long he will be out for action for. Hamstring injuries can range from days to months to recover from depending on the grade of the tear and this means that he could be back next week or it could be his season over and done with.

Losing him for any number of matches will be a huge blow as he has shown that he does have the quality to make a big impact when he does play. He has scored two goals in his three Premiership starts, including one against Celtic in the Old Firm, and has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.98 in the division.

Ramsey can score from midfield and has the experience in European competition that can be vital against RB Leipzig in the semi-finals of the Europa League. He has played for Arsenal and Juventus in Europe and this means that he knows what it takes to perform at that level, making his potential absence against the German side a sizeable concern for the head coach and that is another reason why he will be furious with this injury blow.
