Alex Cora Takes Blame for Red Sox Woes After Extra Innings Loss

The Boston Red Sox lost their second game in a row and eighth in their last 10 on Tuesday night in a one-run loss in extra innings vs. the Los Angeles Angels. The narrow defeat dropped the Red Sox to 29-34 on the season, where they sit in fourth place in the AL East and 10 games back from the division-leading New York Yankees.

Following the 4-3 loss to the Angels at Fenway Park on Tuesday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora looked internally and blamed himself amid his team's recent struggles.

“We keep making the same mistakes," Cora said postgame, via MassLive's Christopher Smith. "We’re not getting better. At one point it has to be on me I guess, right? I’m the manager. I’ve gotta keep pushing them to get better. They’re not getting better. They’re not. We keep making the same mistakes.”

The Red Sox committed three errors Tuesday night, which brings their season total to 53 and surpasses the Colorado Rockies (51) for the most in the MLB. The Red Sox and Rockies have given up over 10 more errors than the next closest teams—the Chicago White Sox and Angels have each committed 40 total errors.

Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello gave up three runs to the Angels in the third inning on Tuesday before center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela eventually tied the game in the sixth with a 426-foot two-run home run over the Green Monster. The game remained tied through nine innings before L.A. played small ball to get a run across in the top of the 10th, which turned into the winning run.

Boston wraps up their quick three-game home stand Wednesday as they hope to avoid a sweep to the Angels. The Red Sox then get a day off to regroup before they head to the Bronx for a weekend series with the Yankees.

Karim Benzema heading back to Real Madrid? Striker says Bernabeu return 'could happen' as he puts Al-Ittihad future in doubt

Legendary former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has opened up on the possibility of a return to the club, with the Frenchman claiming that he can "never say no" to club president Florentino Perez. Benzema didn't rule out a reunion with his former employers, where he enjoyed a glorious 14-year spell before leaving for Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023.

Benzema enjoying life at Al-Ittihad

Benzema has been having the time of his life in Saudi Arabia after achieving everything there was to achieve at club level following a glorious 14-year spell with Real Madrid. Signed on a three-year contract in 2023, Benzema has delivered success to Al-Ittihad while also becoming one of the pioneers of Saudi Arabian football. He fired Al-Ittihad to a domestic double last season, as his 25 goals across competitions helped the Tigers claim the Saudi Pro League and King's Cup titles.

Since leaving Europe, Benzema has scored 46 goals in 75 games, and still looks in great form. His goal scoring numbers are on par with what he produced in his final few years at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, with the Frenchman into the final seven months of his deal in Jeddah, his future has become a topic of hot debate.

In a recent interview, the 37-year-old opened up on his future, where he addressed a possible return to Los Blancos.

AdvertisementAFPBenzema open to Real Madrid return, but only on one condition

Speaking to , the French forward was asked if he imagined Real Madrid calling him for a possible reunion. He gave a pretty straightforward response, claiming that it could be possible as long as Madrid president Florentino Perez is at the club.

"Why? (Laughs). He's someone I can never say no to. Florentino is special," he acknowledged. "If Florentino is still there, it could happen, it could happen. I talk to him and it's possible. I'm a Real Madrid fan. I feel it in my soul. Madrid is still my city, I feel like a Real Madrid fan and a Madrileno. We'll see what happens. If he's there…"

He added: "It will always be my team. I still watch the games whenever I can. It's the best club in the world. It always has been and it always will be. It's a team with a lot of potential that I think can do more than it's doing right now."

Benzema: A bona fide Real Madrid legend

Benzema's Madrid career began in the summer of 2009, when he was signed from Lyon. The Frenchman created history and broke several records at Madrid. He is one of the most decorated players in the club's history, winning 25 titles, which includes five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles.

Benzema stands in fifth position as far as all-time Real Madrid appearances are concerned; the striker played in 648 games for the club and is the non-Spanish player with the highest appearances for the 15-time European champions. Not just that, he is also the second-highest goal scorer in Madrid's history, scoring a whopping 354 goals. No other player has had more assists for Madrid than Benzema's 165. His illustrious career in the Spanish capital culminated in him winning the Ballon d'Or in 2022.

Getty Images SportWhat does the future hold for Benzema?

As things stand, Benzema's future in Saudi Arabia continues to be clouded in uncertainty. With his contract expiring at the end of this season, there's no news about a possible extension. However, Benzema has confirmed that he will continue playing for two more years.

"For the moment, I'm very happy here; they show me a lot of affection," he said. "Players, fans, coach, people who work here… I watch Real Madrid matches. I watch the Champions League and imagine what's next. The Champions League is magical. My contract here is nearing its end, that's true. I still can't say whether I'll stay or leave; it depends on many things. I'll be 38 in December. I see myself playing football for another two years. Physically, I'm fine, I work hard, and I'm playing football. I love football; I enjoy it. We'll see what happens, what the club thinks. I like to talk face-to-face and see what they think."

Benzema also hinted that a return to Europe cannot be ruled out, revealing that he has several offers from European outfits.

"The best thing for me is to continue here, but also not just stay for the sake of staying for a year or two," he added. "I can't do that. I think the level of football in the Saudi league is getting better and better. I've been here for three years now, and it keeps getting better and better. It's true that I have offers from Europe. I have to look at everything, choose wisely, and see where I feel comfortable, without forgetting that I feel good here and receive affection from everyone. But we'll see. They ask me for things, and I give them things. Everything's fifty-fifty, but there are things happening. I'm not going to quit football and stop competing in six months."

Newcastle player hated living in England and is pushing to be sold for cut price fee

One Newcastle United player has found the experience of playing in England “bad” and now wants to leave the club, in a significant new update.

Howe demands more quality from Newcastle

The Magpies have suffered some demoralising home defeats already this season, including against Liverpool and Barcelona, and Arsenal inflicted a last-gasp loss on them on Sunday afternoon.

While Eddie Howe could find positives from Newcastle’s performance, he has also made it clear that he needs to see the same level of quality as he does commitment from his players.

“I think harsh words are sometimes needed. Whether that is to the team or to indviduals, I will usually look to do it on an individual basis. What I look for is effort, commitment, desire and organisation.

“There are so many things that go into a performance. I am seeing the effort there, but the quality was lacking. So I have to be very careful. You don’t want to make the morale or the mood worse, I will be very reflective tonight and figure out a way forward tomorrow.”

This is still a strong Newcastle squad that Howe has at his disposal, but it looks increasingly as though one player doesn’t have a long-term future at St James’ Park, following a fresh update.

Newcastle player wants permanent St James' exit

According to a new update from Estadio Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Newcastle goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos wants to leave the club permanently, despite only joining last year.

The 31-year-old is currently out on loan at Sevilla, keeping a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano over the weekend, and he wants to stay there permanently, following a “bad experience” living in England. He is valued at £4.3m by Transfermarkt and hopes to be sold for an “affordable price” by Newcastle.

The January transfer window feels like the right time for Newcastle to sell Vlachodimos for good, considering Howe doesn’t appear to have any plans for him at the club moving forward.

This is despite Jurgen Klopp speaking glowingly about him after an impressive performance for Benfica against Liverpool back in 2022.

“We should have scored much more. I think, mainly because of their goalkeeper, credit to him. Their goalkeeper was probably the game’s best player. We played well, but he made a couple of really good saves.”

Sometimes, a move simply doesn’t work out for various reasons, which appears to be the case for Vlachodimos at Newcastle, and it’s now a case of them trying to get as much money as possible for his signature.

Tim Boon joins Sri Lanka Cricket as batting consultant

Tim Boon, the former Leicestershire and England Under-19 head coach, has been recruited as a coach and high-performance consultant by Sri Lanka Cricket, on a one-month contract effective from May 8.Boon, who was also England’s team analyst under Duncan Fletcher during the 2005 Ashes win, will work as a batting consultant for the Sri Lanka Women’s senior and A-team squads, as well as the men’s emerging team and the Sri Lanka Under-17s.According to a SLC press release, his programme will include “technical and tactical sessions aimed at improving the players’ overall batting approach and individual performance”.His stint dovetails with that of R Sridhar, India’s former fielding coach, who earlier this month conducted a “comprehensive 10-day fielding programme” for both top men’s and women’s cricketers in Sri Lanka. It is a continuation of SLC’s policy of recruiting overseas coaches on short-term contracts. In 2024, Rajasthan Royals’ high performance director Zubin Bharucha conducted a brief programme aimed at raising batting standards. Wasim Akram and Jonty Rhodes have also been hired to run brief bowling and fielding programmes respectively, in the last 10 years.

Former Premier League referee David Coote pleads guilty to making indecent image of child

Former Premier League referee David Coote has pleaded guilty to making an indecent image of a child. He has appeared at Nottingham Crown Court in connection with allegations regarding a category A video that was recovered by police in February 2025. Coote was granted conditional bail at his latest hearing and is due to appear in court again in December.

Coote spoke in court to confirm name and enter plea

Coote was officially charged in August following an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police. The allegations being made against him are of the most serious kind when it comes to indecent images of children. The 43-year-old – who hails from Collingham in Nottinghamshire – will be back in court later in the year.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charge at a hearing on September 10 at Nottingham Magistrates' Court. That stance has now been changed, with Coote – who wore a navy suit and black tie – speaking only to confirm his name and enter his plea during a six-minute hearing on October 14.

He stood in front of Judge Nirmal Shant KC. She informed Coote that she was ordering a pre-sentence report to be carried out before any proceedings begin in that department. Jude Shant told the court: “You have pleaded guilty to a serious matter. Whether this means custody or not will be decided when all the information is before the court, which is why I have ordered a pre-sentence report.”

After entering his latest plea, Coote is due back in court on December 11, 2025. Judge Shant added in relation to the charge of making an indecent image of a child – which refers to activities such as downloading, sharing or saving photos or videos containing abuse: “You must not go away with the impression that this will not lead to a custodial sentence.”

PGMOL statement after Coote sacking

Coote has endured a troubled time of late, with the emergence of a video online that showed him making derogatory comments about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp leading to his sacking by the PGMOL in 2024.

A statement from Professional Game Match Officials Limited read: "Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote's conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.

“David Coote's actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable. Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare. David Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.”

Coote, who also featured in a video showing him apparently snorting a white powder at Euro 2024, came out as gay in January 2025. He told The Sun of his struggles on and off the field: “I felt a deep sense of shame during my teenage years in particular. I didn’t come out to my parents until I was 21. I didn’t come out to my friends until I was 25.

“My sexuality isn’t the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I’m not telling an authentic story if I don’t say that I’m gay, and that I’ve had real struggles dealing with hiding that. I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that’s led me to a whole course of behaviours.”

GettyFA statement after eight-week suspension

In August, Coote was given an eight-week suspension by the Football Association over the Klopp footage. A statement from the FA read: “David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jurgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1. It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach,' which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. No charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated.”

Liverpool player ratings vs Chelsea: Arne Slot's feeling the heat – Mohamed Salah takes the blame as woeful finishing sees Reds' wretched recent run continue

Liverpool fell to a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge that means Arne Slot is now on his worst run as Liverpool manager. The result ensures Arsenal will head into the international break leading the way in the Premier League table, a point clear of the Reds, with Mohamed Salah's wayward shooting proving a decisive factor in the dismal loss in the capital.

Chelsea came flying out of the blocks and made the early breakthrough as Moises Caicedo accelerated past Alexis Mac Allister before unleashing a venomous strike that flew into the top corner and left Premier League debutant Giorgi Mamardashvili with no chance. Liverpool were struggling to get a proper foothold in the game after falling behind although a delicious Salah cross with the outside of his left foot created the visitors' best chance of the half, only for Isak to head over the bar.

Salah then had a chance of his own immediately after the half-time break, with Florian Wirtz, brought on at half-time by Slot as he looked to address his side's sluggish performance, nonchalantly flicking the ball into the Egyptian's path only for him to lash a wild shot off target. It summed up a hugely disappointing display from the former Chelsea man, who was uncharacteristically wild with his attempts at goal.

The equaliser would eventually arrive, however, with Gakpo smashing into the net after Isak's touch dropped kindly for the Dutchman on the half-volley. Mamardashvili was then forced into making two decent stops to deny Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian, but he could do nothing to stop the Brazilian's winning goal, as he ghosted in at the far post deep into stoppage-time to convert Marc Cucurella's low cross.

GOAL rates Liverpool's players from Stamford Bridge…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Giorgi Mamardashvili (6/10):

Can't blame him for failing to keep out Caicedo's rocket, or Estevao's winner, and he made a couple of smart second-half saves on what was his Premier League debut.

Conor Bradley (5/10):

Hooked at half-time as he walked a disciplinary tightrope following his first-half yellow card, with Garnacho in no mood to stay on his feet.

Ibrahima Konate (5/10):

Used his physicality to limit Joao Pedro's impact on the game but dawdled on the ball one too many times for Slot's liking, resulting in him being substituted early on in the second half.

Virgil van Dijk (4/10):

Should've stepped out to close down Caicedo for the opener and was nowhere to be seen in the middle as Cucurella's low cross made it all the way to the far post.

Milos Kerkez (5/10):

Had some issues containing Pedro Neto and Slot decided enough was enough as he brought on Andy Robertson after 55 minutes.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Ryan Gravenberch (5/10):

A rare off day for Gravenberch as the game bypassed him somewhat. A disappointing evening was compounded when he switched off and failed to track Cucurella's run for the late winner.

Alexis Mac Allister (5/10):

Saw his error of judgement pounced upon by Caicedo for the emphatic first goal. Never really got going after that.

Dominik Szoboszlai (5/10):

Wasn't able to influence the game as much as he'd have liked and was then deployed at right-back for the second half, a move that clearly took him out of his comfort zone.

AFPAttack

Mohamed Salah (3/10):

Has his finishing ever been this bad? Wasted two or three presentable opportunities as he failed to hit the target on what was a really slack display from the Egyptian.

Alexander Isak (6/10):

A dismal first-half where he was made to look distinctly ordinary by Acheampong. Improved in the second and claimed the assist for Gakpo's goal but Liverpool fans will be expecting far more.

Cody Gakpo (8/10):

Looked the most likely to make something happen and duly belted home the equaliser as he linked up with Isak. Certainly not his fault that Liverpool lost again.

Getty Images SportSubs & Manager

Florian Wirtz (6/10):

On at half-time and almost made an immediate impact with a delicious flick that set-up Salah. Didn't really happen for him after that.

Andy Robertson (4/10):

Replaced Kerkez shortly after half-time and lost Estevao at the far post for the late winner.

Curtis Jones (6/10):

On for Konate after 55 minutes and tried to get Liverpool moving forward on the counter.

Hugo Ekitike (N/A):

Came on for the final 15 minutes as Isak started to flag but had little impact.

Wataru Endo (4/10):

Introduced for the last few minutes and allowed Cucurella to run off him for the winning goal.

Arne Slot (4/10):

A really disappointing display from his side as they failed to stop the rot. That's the first time he's lost three games in a row as Liverpool manager and some bold and quite bizarre substitutions that saw players playing out of position really didn't pay off here.

Progress with Unity! Man Utd Women set for stadium name change with immediate effect as local council launches new initiative

The stadium used by Manchester United Women and the club's Under-21 men is officially being renamed from Leigh Sports Villag. The immediate change was approved by Wigan Council this week and reflects a renewed emphasis on community spirit and shared values. The rebrand comes just days after United Women set a new attendance record at the venue.

Leigh Sports Village undergoes a rebrand

Leigh Sports Village, the long-time home of Manchester United Women, has undergone a significant change. The stadium will now be called the Progress With Unity Stadium following approval at a Wigan Council meeting, although the overall site, which includes various health, sport and leisure facilities, will retain the original LSV name. The new stadium name takes immediate effect, with the venue continuing to host both United Women, the club's Under-21 team, and the Leigh Leopards rugby league team.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWigan Council Leader explains the change in name

Council leader David Molyneux MBE explained the reasoning behind the change, stating: "It's important to note that Progress With Unity isn't just our initiative, it has partnership working and the strength of our communities at its heart. In many ways, Leigh Sports Village encapsulates this approach; it is a complex of facilities to be proud of, hosting professional and grassroots organisations and delivering community-based services. We believe the new name for the stadium is therefore, an appropriate step to promote what we are trying to achieve here in our borough and be a figurehead for our shared values."

Man Utd set Leigh Sports Village attendance record

The timing of the name change adds extra significance after United Women's latest home match against Arsenal drew a record crowd of 8,665 supporters. That figure surpassed the previous high of 8,348 set in the same fixture last season. The rebrand is seen as a way to further strengthen the stadium's identity as a hub of both elite and community sport.
