O Clássico dos Milhões do próximo sábado promete mexer com a emoção dos torcedores. O clima de provocações já toma conta do duelo. Mas se engana quem pensa que Guerrero nunca fez um contra o Vasco. Em 2012, pelo Corinthians, ele fez o gol da vitória de 1 a 0 sobre o Vasco, no Pacaembu, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro.

Nesta temporada, Guerrero tem ótimos números. Ele já fez seis gols em cinco jogos no Campeonato Carioca e chega com boas credencias no clássico.

Writing on Twitter, journalist Jack Rosser of the Evening Standard has lifted the lid on a GSB call with his 9-word West Ham transfer revelation involving Ryan Bertrand.

The Lowdown: West Ham line up new defenders?

The defensive department is one key area of the pitch West Ham have been touted to reinforce this transfer window.

Centre-backs appear mainly on the agenda, with a recent Claret & Hugh report stating the Irons are keen for new bodies in that position.

The Englishman has now agreed to join Leicester City upon the expiry of his Saints contract but West Ham apparently had the chance to make a move – with Rosser dropping the 9-word claim ‘West Ham turned down the chance to sign him’.

West Ham had been backed to exploit the free agent market by reliable club insider ExWHUemployee as a useful tool, especially given the club’s financial difficulties due to coronavirus.

Alas, it appears Bertrand wasn’t worth the effort in that regard.

The Verdict: Good call?

Bertrand was a mainstay under Ralph Hasenhuttl during his last season on the south coast, where he started 29 Premier League games.

During that time, he made the third-most tackles per 90 on average (2.1) out of any Southampton player with over 20 appearances (WhoScored), so we believe he could have been an astute back up option for West Ham – especially on a free deal.

You could of course make an argument that the 31-year-old would’ve been a quick fix to bolster left-back position and hardly a long term solution, but with barely any fees involved, the Irons had little to lose financially.

Lessons have been learnt and time will tell if these will be put into practice to avoid any further embarrassment to the national team, cricket in South Africa and especially the national selectors.Coming off successful Test series in Zimbabwe, and at home against India, the national team continued in their winning ways by taking the Standard Bank Tri-Nations played between South Africa, India and Kenya before departing for a “World Championship” in Australia.Apart from winning the VB one-day series in Australia, two Test series drubbings (home and away) by the Australians and a 5-1 loss to Australia in the one-day series back at home asked a number of questions of South African cricket.The retirement of Alan Donald from Test cricket left a gaping hole in the South African attack. Various players were used to fill “White Lightning’s” boots, but to date no one has proved to be up to it. The improved form of Makhaya Ntini towards the end of the season was one redeeming feature.On the domestic front KwaZulu-Natal walked away with all the trophies on offer – the Standard Bank Cup, beating Western Province in the final; The Discovery Challenge, beating Gauteng in the final after the scores were tied; and the SuperSport Trophy, drawing with Northerns as they set a new South Africa record score in the final.Graeme Smith with a total of 738 runs at an average of 67.09, putting him third behind Mike Rindel’s 785 and 766 all time runs in any season, emerged from the Standard Bank Series as the highest scorer and went on to establish himself in the South African team.Garnett Kruger with the most wickets in the Standard Bank Series – 21 – never once received an international call-up even though the national team always seemed to be short of a bowler. Once again, however, when South Africa needed a bowler of international standard he was left out. His age, 37, appears to have counted against him.While most players are resting, Shaun Pollock, Lance Klusener, Nicky Boje and Graeme Smith are off for a stint of cricket in England, and it is time for administrators to sit down and come up with the correct answers before heading towards the World Cup in 2003.

Celtic’s work in the transfer market is beginning to gather pace ahead of an intense pre-season that’ll involve the Hoops’ European qualification campaign.

With full competitive fixtures approaching in just a matter of weeks, Ange Postecoglou needs to act quickly.

What’s the word?

One of the biggest uncertainties at Celtic right now is the future of Odsonne Edouard.

The Frenchman looked set to join Leicester in a £15m deal but that move has now fallen through.

Consequently, he’s weighing up his options this summer and could yet stay at Paradise for the remaining year of his contract.

If he does move then Celtic will need a new forward. That’s the opinion of Charlie Nicholas who stated this week that the Bhoys should consider a move for Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah.

He said in The Scottish Daily Express (29/06, p57): “I still think they need another striker, even if they re-sign Leigh Griffiths and continue with Albian Ajeti, I believe they still need another one, especially if Odsonne Edouard goes.

Nicholas added: “I would try and get Eddie Nketiah from my old club Arsenal. He has been linked with West Ham United and teams in the Bundesliga and he is a really quick and exciting talent. He had a spell on loan at Leeds cut short because of injury but he is back fit and he is one I would look at either on a loan or a permanent contract, if that could be done.”

Bye-bye Edouard

Like Celtic’s star man, Nketiah’s future is also rather uncertain at Arsenal.

He was severely limited in first-team opportunities towards the end of the campaign and with the Englishman yet to sign a new deal, he could be granted an exit by Gunners boss Mikel Arteta.

An arrival at Celtic, either permanently or on loan, would be a captivating one for Postecoglou.

Nketiah is the very definition of a poacher, using clever movement and quick thinking inside the penalty area to outsmart defenders.

Noel Whelan once commented: “He plays off the shoulder, very dangerous in the box. He’s a player you can’t take your eye off because his movement’s so good.”

His record of 18 goals at senior level isn’t the most exciting tally but he’s found regular starts hard to come by.

The 22-year-old’s tally at youth level speaks volumes, however. He racked up 28 goals in 39 outings for Arsenal’s U23s, while he’s the record scorer for England U21s with 16 strikes in 17 matches.

Dubbed a “goal machine” by Michael Owen, a move to the Premiership could be exactly what he needs to kick start his career.

Nketiah has pace in abundance and is a ruthless goalscorer when afforded regular minutes. Crucially, he would also suit Postecoglou’s system.

The Arsenal forward is already used to an attacking style and intense press from his time under Arteta in the English capital.
