It’s claimed that Dean Smith’s top priority is finding another striker before the start of the new campaign and his former Bees star is a perfect fit for Villa Park.

There is a belief from the club’s hierarchy that they fear that are involved in a bidding auction and are reluctant to get involved in such matters – it’s thought that Brentford want £25m for his services.

Maupay 2.0

Oh, how this feels ever so similar to Maupay last year – another player that Smith knows well and would have been a far greater option than Wesley or Mbwana Samatta.

The Villa boss revealed that his former club were asking for too much money for the French forward yet he only joined Brighton for an initial £16m, and that’s proven to be a smart decision after his ten goals and three assists in the Premier League.

Smith simply can’t afford to not sign Watkins this summer as Villa desperately crave a goalscorer and who better than a player that the boss already worked with and even brought to Griffin Park back in 2017.

The 49-year-old once claimed the young forward looked “a hell of a player” with his ability to play in several positions whilst Trevor Sinclair dubbed him “lethal” amid comparisons to Jermain Defoe.

Watkins bagged a whopping 26 goals in the Championship this season playing primarily as a striker and averaged 2.7 shots, 1.5 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per appearance, via WhoScored.

That is absolutely worth £25m, so Smith should stop messing around and instead look to help his Villa side avoid another worrying relegation scrap.

He missed out on Maupay and paid for it severely, do not miss out on Watkins.

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth has been linked with a potential move to La Liga, although Spurs and Jose Mourinho reportedly have contrasting views on the player’s future.

The print edition of Spanish media outlet AS reported [via Sport Witness] that Villarreal are considering a move for the 22-year-old, who the manager is ready to discard but who the Lilywhites don’t want to sell on a permanent basis.

Foyth, who was regarded as a protege of former Spurs manger and fellow Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, has played just three times under Mourinho since his appointment last November. His most recent appearance came in the 2-2 draw at Norwich at the end of 2019, during which he was taken off at half-time and subsequently pilloried by a number of Tottenham fans.

While a couple of lengthy injuries didn’t help his cause during 2019/20, that he made just seven appearances in all competitions and started a solitary Premier League game illustrates how peripheral a presence he has become in north London.

Even with Jan Vertonghen no longer at the club, Mourinho still has Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and Cameron Carter-Vickers to call upon as centre-back options, with Alasdair Gold tweeting last week that Mourinho has ‘clearly liked’ what he has seen from the latter.

Foyth’s average of 1.8 successful tackles per game last season was bettered only by Tanganga among Spurs’ central defenders but his match average of 0.3 interceptions was somewhat less flattering.

Having fallen very much out of favour with Mourinho in recent months, it would seem in Foyth’s best interests to seek a reboot of his career elsewhere.

However, he is still young enough to improve substantially as a player, while his 10 caps for Argentina would suggest that he is no slouch. Also, if Pochettino saw something in him to sign him in 2017 and give him plenty of first team opportunities, Tottenham would be right not to be hasty in discarding him completely.

A loan move should allow Foyth to reignite his career as well as ensuring that Spurs can still derive long-term value from the player.

Celtic have been dealt a rather big blow in their pursuit of Mattia De Sciglio as Anthony Joseph has tweeted that sources at SkySport have said that the Juventus ace has ruled out a move to Scotland.

According to the tweet from the football journalist, Neil Lennon’s team have made an enquiry to sign him on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 term before the summer transfer window shuts.

However, De Sciglio has ruled out a move to Scottish football, as the Old Lady remain open to offers for the 27-year old, with talks between European clubs PSG and AS Roma to have stalled for now.

Indeed, signing De Sciglio on loan for the rest of the season would have arguably been a shrewd bit of business from the Hoops. He has won the Serie A title no fewer than on three separate occasions with Juve and has also claimed several domestic trophies to his name, as per Transfermarkt.

The winning mentality of the Italy international could have been vital in the dressing room as the Celts look to win the Scottish Premiership yet again while also trying to do well in the UEFA Europa League.

De Sciglio was limited to just nine games in Italy’s top flight in the 2019/20 campaign, but still managed to win a relatively impressive 3.3 of his duels per match and also averaged 1.6 clearances, 1.1 tackles and 1.1 successful dribbles a game (via Sofascore).

Nonetheless, it looks as if the Bhoys will miss out on loaning him in and will now have to look at pursuing other targets before the market officially closes.

According to the Express & Star’s Joseph Masi, the Midlands outfit will look to conclude a deal for Slaven Bilic’s “number one target” Karlan Grant before the domestic deadline in under ten days time.

The club has been locked in talks with Huddersfield Town over a move for the 23-year-old all summer but the two teams remain wide apart from their structures of the deal.

The Baggies would like to sign Grant on loan for £5m and then pay a remaining £13m should they regain their Premier League status next summer.

Dowling under pressure

Leaving it this late is awfully risky business from Albion’s technical director as it’s only going to put the pressure on him if he fails to deliver the one man Bilic has wanted all summer.

They have already endured a tough start to life in the Premier League and dealing another devastating blow could cause an irreparable rippling effect as the season rumbles on.

To continue with just Callum Robinson, a winger by trade, and Hal Robson-Kanu, who has only ever bagged 12 goals in 78 top-flight appearances, is awfully stupid.

Both Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore barely cut the mustard in the Championship and as a result are on the chopping block to any interested EFL team, though it only highlights the desperate need for another striker in through the door at the Hawthorns.

Grant scored more goals than the aforementioned duo combined – per WhoScored, the Terriers star bagged 19 times and averaged 2.6 shots, 1.2 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

He’s also yet to feature this campaign, so the prospect of losing out to him through injury isn’t on the table right now.

Once lauded as a player who “causes problems and scores goals,” Grant must be tapped up at all costs otherwise Dowling and the Albion hierarchy have so much to answer for.

If they do get relegated at the first time of asking, then Bilic can’t be held accountable.
