If you were to ask an Arsenal fan what area of the pitch they believe needs the most work, the most common answer would be the defence.

The Gunners have at times been laughable this season due to some of the horrific defensive errors and lack of organisation that saw Unai Emery’s side finish outside the top-four for a third consecutive year, and work is expected to be done this summer.

Charlie Nicholas (via the Metro) believes Shkodran Mustafi should leave this transfer window with the German centre-back the main culprit for Arsenal’s shoddy defending and the north London side are highly expected to bring in one or two more defenders to improve the quality of what Emery has at his disposal, and a big name has been rumoured.

According to Il Messaggero, Arsenal are ready to activate Kostas Manolas’ £31 million release clause this summer as the Greek defender looks to move on from AS Roma after five years in the Italian capital if they don’t finish in a Champions League spot come the end of the Serie A season.

Manolas, who is valued on Transfermakrt at £40.5 million, has been rumoured with a move to Arsenal ever since his days at Olympiakos, and now the Gunners have the golden opportunity to finally secure the signature of the 27-year-old defender, who will be a game-changing signing for Emery.

It’s been a long time since Arsenal had a solid duo in the heart of the defence, but with Manolas, that will become a problem of the past with Sokratis and Rob Holding already at the club and both more than capable of complimenting the Greek in the starting XI.

Arsenal have long sought to sign Manolas, and this summer will be the perfect chance to bring in the man who will transform the club’s defence, and take them one big step forward into becoming an elite team again.

وكان مانشستر سيتي قد أعلن، يوم الخميس الماضي، توقيع جوارديولا على عقد جديد حتى عام 2023.

وقال توريس، في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “مترو” الإنجليزية: “يسعدنا جميعًا أن جوارديولا سيبقى معنا لسنوات أخرى، نأمل أن يمنحنا المزيد من النجاح، نحن جميعًا سعداء بالأخبار”.

وأضاف: “عندما أتيت، علمت أنها كانت فرصة رائعة بالنسبة لي، كنت أعلم أن الأمر سيكون صعبًا بسبب تغيير الدوري والدولة، لكنني عملت بجد كل يوم من أجل الحصول على فرصة اللعب مع هذا الفريق”.

وواصل: “هدفي هو العمل الجاد حتى يثق جوارديولا بي ومن ثم يمنحني دقائق”.

وكان توريس قد انتقل إلى مانشستر سيتي قادمًا من فالنسيا، في موسم الانتقالات الصيفي الماضي.

Crystal Palace cleared plenty of deadwood out in January, with Jason Puncheon, Jonny Williams and Jordon Mutch all shown the door; others survived the winter clearout but could be sold this summer as the Eagles look to improve the overall quality of the squad and Christian Benteke could be the first casualty.

The big Belgian was subject to a £15m bid from Chinese outfit Shandong Luneng Taisan this week – presumably the big wigs in the east haven’t been paying too much attention to his performances in the past couple of seasons, in which he has chalked up just four goals.

Alan Pardew brought the 28-year-old to Selhurst Park in 2016 for a then-club-record fee of £27m and the player repaid that sum in his first season in red and blue, scoring 17 goals across all competitions, but he managed just three in 2017/18 and only one in 2018/19 – a shocking return.

Unai Emery has tried a plethora of different formations this season, but his favoured seems to be the 3-4-1-2 formation, a system that doesn’t work as successfully without Nacho Monreal.

The Chalkboard

Emery has played a 3-4-1-2 in victories against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Napoli and Valencia and it seems the system covers all the bases of Arsenal’s strengths and papers over the cracks of their weaknesses.

Arsenal have no wingers, so the width is provided by their wing-backs Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac. The Gunners’ centre-backs have struggled so the inclusion of a third gives more protection. Emery’s side boast two wonderful forwards who both get to start in their favoured position, and they even have depth in the number 10 role, Mesut Ozil being their main man who can float and create with wide options and two strikers to target.

The Spanish coach’s preferred back three includes Nacho Monreal with club favourite Laurent Koscielny and summer signing Sokratis. Despite the other two being more renowned for defensive excellence, it’s the ex-Malaga man who’s so vital to ensuring Arsenal execute the system correctly, making it easier for his two partners to his right.

Balance and distribution

Monreal brings two key elements to the back-three system that allows the Gunners to play it as effectively as possible.

The first is his history as a left-back. Similar to Cesar Azpilicueta at Chelsea, both Spaniards have been converted to central roles in a back-three perhaps less for their stature and dominance and more for their intelligence and the balance they bring to the defence.

When the wing-backs get forward, it’s so vital that either side of the defence is covered by someone able to get across from centre-back, but also someone familiar with the role and positioning a defender needs to take up when protecting the channels.

Monreal’s understanding of what to do in these areas of the pitch allows Sead Kolasinac to attack far more comfortably knowing that there’s suitable defensive cover.

The second part to Monreal’s job is his distribution from the back. In modern football, we see holding midfielders become more and more gifted in possession as they’re expected to be more than ball-winners and start attacks from deep for their side. In the back-three Arsenal play, the Gunners don’t have this luxury as there is only a midfield two sitting ahead, so there’s no natural deep-lying playmaker.

This means Monreal, advantaged by being left-footed in that position, has the responsibility to step up into midfield and thread balls through to the pivot. He can do this confidently as the back three will have more defensive cover with the extra partner. The right and left centre-back are charged with the responsibility of beginning a phase of attacking play and using their intelligence and passing range to pick out players in space.

None of this can be done as effectively if the defender in question isn’t capable on the ball or has the intelligence to understand how to cover the areas vacated by marauding wing-backs. This is why Arsenal have looked a lot better defensively all season when Monreal has played as part of a three, rather than when opting for a more natural centre-back like Shokdran Mustafi to slot in at left centre-back instead.

Arsenal fans, we know this summer could be a tough one for you. The key thing is that whatever Unai Emery does on the transfer front, the Gunners have to get behind his decisions and trust him to take the club in the right direction. With links to Ryan Fraser, though, it’s clear the Spaniard is on the right path.

Emery has been making the best of what he’s got at the Emirates, and whilst the players and the funds aren’t what they were at his last job with PSG, he’s still showing signs of promise.

The run to the Europa League final shows just that, but the aim is a Champions League return, and Fraser can almost certainly help push the north Londoners closer to that, as he’s linked with a move by The Mirror.

The Scottish winger, aged 25, is starting to shine on the south coast. He may have been a late developer, but considering he bagged an incredible seven goals and 14 assists last season, stats via Transfermarkt, there is certainly a player in there.

If he was to jump ship and swap Dean Court for the Emirates then those tallies would surely only increase too, so this is one the fans are rightly getting excited about.

There is plenty of news currently surrounding Tottenham Hotspur. The main reports so far are in regards to Christian Eriksen, who may be on the move this summer after telling Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet he would be open to a switch to Real Madrid. Spurs, meanwhile, are looking to bring in some new faces, and may yet even lose another star name. Here’s a look at the latest rumours involving the north Londoners…

Bizarre Lo Celso report

Despite BBC Sport reporting that Spurs have already tabled a £53million offer, ABC Sevilla claim Spurs have bid just €40m (£35.66m) for Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso – which the La Liga club, allegedly but also understandably, scoffed at. Lo Celso joined the club from PSG in April following an initial loan period and after a stunning season in the Spanish top flight appears to be one of Tottenham’s main targets this summer. The ABC Sevilla update is certainly a strange one and doesn’t appear to fit the majority of the information given on Tottenham’s pursuit so far this summer.

Sakai to solve right-back problem?

Spurs are currently light at right-back, with neither Kieran Trippier or Serge Aurier looking to have a secure future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. As such, Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly interested in Marseille’s Hiroki Sakai according to Sky Sports. At 29 years old, he does not fit the club’s usual transfer target profile, but the Japanese international has still made the shortlist as a reliable option.

Lloris on PSG shortlist

Along with Eriksen, Tottenham may also lose captain Hugo Lloris this summer, according to the Sun. PSG are fans of him, and may make a move for the Frenchman if a deal for first-choice target David De Gea cannot be completed.
