More potential than Wissa & Ramos: Newcastle lead race to sign £60m striker

Newcastle United remain one of the most dangerous and dynamic teams in English football. A frustrating summer transfer window won’t change that.

Let’s not forget that last year Eddie Howe’s Magpies won the Carabao Cup (beating Liverpool in the final at Wembley) and secured a seat in this season’s Champions League proper, their second in three years.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes celebrate after the match

And let’s not forget that that success came off the back of a frustrating summer transfer window, with four bids not enough to convince Crystal Palace to sell Marc Guehi and efforts also fruitless in a bid to sign Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga.

But persistence is so often a virtue in the football industry, and Elanga now plays in black and white, while interest in Palace’s Guehi remains, albeit with Liverpool holding the lead in the race for the England defender.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

The Reds. Monday night can’t come soon enough. It’s bound to be a cauldron of chaos at St. James’ Park as United welcome the Premier League champions, who are hoping to sign Howe’s wantaway talisman, Alexander Isak.

Should they succeed, Newcastle will need one or two replacements.

The latest on Alexander Isak

Isak’s future remains undetermined, but it’s difficult to envisage a way back for the Sweden international, who has removed himself from Howe’s first-team plans as he focuses on pushing through a move to Merseyside before the transfer deadline.

Liverpool have already seen a formal offer worth an initial £110m knocked back, and they are ready to go again when, or if, given the green light by the Magpies.

Efforts continue for a successor. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa is on strike as he looks to force through a move to Tyneside, while interest in Paris Saint-Germain forward Goncalo Ramos has surfaced of late.

PSG forward Goncalo Ramos

But there’s another player dwelling in the Premier League who might prove to be the pick of the bunch, with more potential than the pair of them as an elite star in English football.

Newcastle lead race for Isak heir

According to reports in Italy, as translated by Sport Witness, AC Milan have made contact with Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, although Newcastle hold the lead in the race for the Senegalese striker.

Jackson, 24, has been marked as surplus to requirements following the latest overhaul at Stamford Bridge, and he’s been valued at £60m by the Blues, with Aston Villa’s movements also suggesting interest this month.

It is stressed that any potential deal for Jackson hinges on Isak moving to Liverpool or remaining on Tyneside for the upcoming year.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Nicolas Jackson could succeed at Newcastle

Two years ago, Jackson joined Chelsea from Villarreal in La Liga for a £32m fee. Across his two years in the Premier League, it’s fair to say he’s ebbed and flowed, showing flashes of high-class ability that’s seen him described as “special” by journalist Rahman Osman, before being pulled back by wayward finishing and questionable decision-making.

Nicolas Jackson

But perhaps we’re selling him short. Jackson might have some work to do in regard to his finishing, but he’s a mobile and hard-working striker who thrives in transition, which just so happens to be one of Howe’s biggest tactical strengths.

Based on data from FBref, Jackson ranks among the top 18% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 15% for pass completion and the top 18% for progressive carries per 90, with such statistics even seeing Isak listed as one of his most comparable players.

Of course, Jackson is not Isak, but he’s got the making of an elite striker, one who could stretch beyond that of the aforementioned Wissa and Ramos.

Signing Ramos, who stars for perhaps the best team in the world right now, is an attractive thought, but would he be the right signing?

The Portugal striker, 24, only started 12 times in Ligue 1 last season, and he scored ten times. Pretty good stuff, but Sofascore record that he also missed 18 big chances, also missing five big chances in the Champions League, scoring three goals there.

Paris Saint-Germain's Goncalo Ramos.

Playing on the faster-paced, higher-octane Premier League landscape, might Ramos fall by the wayside? Certainly, his ball-striking leaves something to be desired, though there’s no denying that his movement and energy would add something to Newcastle, having posted 34 goals and eight assists across 88 matches for PSG, also bagging nine times for Portugal across 16 caps.

With Wissa, it’s a little different. The 28-year-old Brentford frontman has been a target for Newcastle all summer and is intent on leaving the Gtech and joining Howe’s cause in the coming weeks.

This move is irrespective of the Isak quandary, and the DR Congo star would be expected to bring an instant clinical touch to the Tyneside squad after scoring 19 goals across the 2024/25 Premier League season.

But he’s very much at the heart of his prime years, and he doesn’t have significant development still to undertake on a personal level.

Jackson, however, has spent two years fostering his talents at Chelsea, and might not rise a level or two if entrusted with a starring role at Newcastle, where he would find all he needs to marry his skill set with Howe’s teachings and reach a level not too far away from that which Toon fans have been treated to over the past three years.

Stung by recent losses, BCCI cracks ten-point whip on men's national team

The guidelines come with a warning that “non-compliance” could result not just in disciplinary action, but heavier sanctions including exclusion from domestic cricket and IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Jan-202514:09

‘How did we get to this?’ – Manjrekar, Bal question how Indian management ‘let it slip’

The BCCI has sent a ten-point guideline document to India’s contracted men’s players in a bid to “promote discipline, unity and a positive team environment”. It is an unprecedented response to a run of poor Test results and comes with a warning that “non-compliance” could result not just in disciplinary action, but heavier sanctions including exclusion from domestic cricket and the IPL, as well as deductions from central contract retainers. The policy will be effective immediately. The document, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, is titled ‘Policy Document for Team India’. It was sent to the players on Thursday. The document was prepared by the BCCI, building on suggestions made at a review meeting last weekend with key decision-makers in Indian cricket. The review meeting was called by BCCI to assess India’s poor run, starting with the home Test series defeat against New Zealand, where India lost 3-0, followed by the 3-1 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Present at the review meeting were head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. Here are some of the key points.Players cannot travel separately to tours/matches/trainingOne of the most significant points discussed at that meeting concerned players not following protocols, which eventually hurt overall atmosphere in the dressing room. Instances were cited of players travelling on their own to series, some players travelling separately to the venue rather than in the team bus, and some players not spending enough time with the group at the team training sessions.Related

Going forward, the BCCI has said, a player will need a “pre-approved” nod from the head coach or head selector to travel separately to and from matches and training sessions. “Separate travel arrangements with families are discouraged to maintain discipline and team cohesion,” the document said. Additionally, the BCCI has said players “are required to stay for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue. This rule ensures commitment and fosters a strong work ethic within the team.”Going ahead a player cannot abort a tour or a series even if the match(es) finish earlier than planned. “This ensures unity, fosters team bonding, and avoids disruption to team dynamics.”Families can be around for a maximum two weeks on long toursAnother key point was whether the presence of players’ families, which became more common after the Covid-19 pandemic, on long tours like the recent one in Australia, was distracting and affecting the focus of players. Consequently, the BCCI has said on tours of 45 days or more, players’ immediate families – partners and children (up to 18 years old) – can be with them for no more than 14 days. The families can visit only once and their travel arrangements have to be made by the player in question after a nod from the coach, captain and the BCCI’s general manager, operations.”The BCCI will cover shared accommodation with the player for the visitors’ period. All other expenses are to be borne by the player,” the document said. The BCCI also said that additional costs outside the pre-approved period for the family would be borne by the player.Players must travel together to and from the venue, the BCCI has said in the document•Darrian Traynor/Getty Images

No travelling with personal staffThe BCCI has also said that team members need to “restrict” personal staff on tours. This could include, and will not be restricted to, personal managers, chefs, assistants and security. “This ensures that the focus remains on team operations and minimises logistical challenges. – this has to be done away with.”The BCCI has also advised team members to not “engage” in personal commercial shoots on tour or during a series to ensure the “focus remains on cricket and team responsibilities”.Domestic cricket ‘mandatory’ for national selectionThe BCCI has reiterated that it’s “mandatory” for players to make themselves available for all domestic cricket. Not doing that could cost them selection for international assignments as well as their central contracts. This rule was laid down by the BCCI last year when it said it was a “cause for concern” having noticed the trend of some players “prioritising IPL over domestic cricket”.In the fresh guidelines, the BCCI has said: “participation in domestic matches is mandatory for players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and for central contracts, as per BCCI guidelines. This policy ensures that players remain connected to the domestic cricket ecosystem, fostering talent development, maintaining match fitness, and strengthening the overall domestic structure. It also inspires emerging players by providing them opportunities to compete alongside top cricketers, ensuring continuity in talent progression.”The BCCI said it would not entertain any exceptions barring “extraordinary circumstances”, which would need the approval by the selection panel head. The sanctionsThe BCCI has stressed that players need to “adhere strictly” to the guidelines and if there is any “non-compliance”, there will be “disciplinary action” including sanctions.”The BCCI reserves the right to take disciplinary action against a player which may include sanction against the concerned player for participating in all BCCI conducted tournaments including the Indian Premier League and deduction from retainer amount/match fees under BCCI player contract.”Implementing such measures, the BCCI said, “ensures accountability and reinforces the importance of adhering to established policies and prioritising Indian cricket.”

Tottenham agreed "un-Spurs like" Kolo Muani deal condition to hint "desperation"

Tottenham’s transfer business for 2025 has officially concluded following one of the most dramatic and memorable summer windows on-lookers have ever seen, with Spurs enjoying a solid one themselves.

Despite their failure to bring in a natural left-winger and centre-back for manager Thomas Frank, which were two key items on their to-do list (Sky Sports), a recruitment team stocked with Daniel Levy, CEO Vinai Vinkatesham, technical director Johan Lange and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici did work some magic.

Following their infamously botched deals for Morgan Gibbs-White -who reportedly phoned Frank to apologise for his U-turn over joining Spurs – and Eberechi Eze, Spurs finally managed to get a replacement for the injured James Maddison by signing Xavi Simons in a £52 million deal from RB Leipzig.

It was all happening in N17 during the final days, with an ankle injury to striker Dominic Solanke also partly forcing Frank’s side into a late temporary deal for long-time target Randal Kolo Muani.

Juventus loanee Randal Kolo Muani celebrates.

Tottenham were actively pursuing the PSG-owned forward in January, only to back out and see Juventus win the race for his signature instead.

The France international really impressed for Juve, bagging 10 goals and three assists in all competitions, and while Igor Tudor wanted him back in Serie A, they couldn’t agree to re-sign him despite lengthy summer talks.

Instead, Spurs tempted Kolo Muani with a move to the Premier League, and Frank is set to benefit from the introduction of a centre-forward who can play in multiple areas with a proven scoring record. Interestingly, the 26-year-old was also a player who ex-manager Ange Postecoglou pushed for in the winter (Paul O’Keefe), and it’s not hard to see why.

His best-ever season to date in 2022/2023 saw the attacker rack up a brilliant 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt, with Kolo Muani also making his mark for France on the international stage.

Semi-final goals against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup and Spain in Euro 2024 showcase partly why Didier Deschamps has kept faith in Kolo Muani, even amidst a lack of game time at PSG, and Tottenham are in dire need of him now that reports suggest Solanke could be out for even longer than anticipated.

Kolo Muani’s arrival could end up being crucial with the influx of matches awaiting Spurs after this international break, leaving little wonder Levy and co were clamoring to get him through the door.

Tottenham agreed "un-Spurs like" Randal Kolo Muani deal condition

Giving his take on the deal, reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold says that Tottenham agreed an ‘un-Spurs like’ condition to sign Kolo Muani from PSG.

Namely, Gold states that the lack of any buy option in this move is something quite out of the ordinary for them, and some might suggest that it highlights their “desperation” to bring in another new attacker (football.london).

Without the inclusion of an obligation or option to buy, if Kolo Muani’s move proves a success, then Levy will need to return to the negotiating table with PSG – by which point they’d be able to command a loftier price tag.

They’ll also face competition from other elite sides on the look-out for a proven striker, so Tottenham face the prospect of this being Kolo Muani’s only season in north London, regardless of how well he performs.

It’s certainly out of Tottenham’s character not to take the future into account, but Frank’s need for attacking reinforcements was pressing, and it perhaps indicates Levy’s increasing willingness to compete after the Lilywhites tasted Europa League glory in May.
