Everton in talks to sign "fantastic" forward once called better than Kane

Everton are believed to be in talks over the signing of a “fantastic” Premier League hero this summer, with the player in question even called better than Harry Kane in the past.

Moyes wants "five or six" new signings at Everton

The Blues have had a productive summer in the transfer market to date, not least acquiring the signature of big-money attacking signing Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

David Moyes will want to build on an excellent start to life back at Everton, however, with the Scot admitting that he still wants plenty of new faces through the door before the window slams shut on September 1st.

“Well, we’ve signed three, so if you take that off, we’re still in the need of maybe five or six players. That’s what we have to try and do. I’ve never had one of these times. In the past I have had to sign a lot of players, but I’ve never had to do so many in one window.”

Everton manager DavidMoyes

While Barry has come in as an exciting new striker for Everton, they may well feel the need to add further depth there, especially following the exit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the potential departure of Beto. Now, an intriguing name has been thrown into the mix to add more firepower to Moyes’ squad.

Everton in talks with Premier League legend Vardy

According to a report from Spain, Everton are in talks with Jamie Vardy over a move to the club this summer, in what would arguably be a shock piece of business. The Blues are the club who have “taken the initiative most seriously”, while the conversations are said to be “on the march” with the striker’s representatives.

The 38-year-old is a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season, following a legendary stint there that included winning the Premier League title back in 2015/16.

Vardy may not be the force he once was, given his age, but it is easy to see him being a good squad player at Everton for a year or two.

The Englishman still possesses plenty of pace and an eye for goal, and Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca even once claimed he is better than Kane and Wayne Rooney among the leading strikers of their generation, having worked with him at Leicester.

“Vardy is fantastic and people don’t realise how good he is. I know that England has been quite lucky with strikers, like Kane, Rooney and many others, but if you ask me he has been the best one. He can do many things, like run in behind and finish, but the best thing for me is his open mind.”

The fact that Vardy would be available on a free transfer almost makes him a gamble worth taking, and if he joins Everton and simply doesn’t have the impact of the past, it would be no disaster.

Neser hamstrung as Test back-up but Richardson comeback gains speed

Neser looks set to be unavailable until after the Brisbane Test but Richardson is closing in on a Sheffield Shield return

Australia’s hopes of having Michael Neser available if needed for the Adelaide or Brisbane Tests have evaporated because of the severity of his hamstring injury, but there is a glimmer of hope that Jhye Richardson could be considered as a back-up option later in the series if his carefully crafted return to first-class cricket remains on track.Neser, 34, suffered the injury on the opening day on the Australia A match against India A at the MCG and looks set to be sidelined until the start of Brisbane Heat’s BBL season on December 18. Neser was unlikely to be selected as Australia’s first-choice back-up seamer for the Perth Test even without the injury, with Scott Boland in line behind Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.Barring an injury in Perth, Australia are unlikely to need Boland for Adelaide given there is a nine-day break between the first and second Tests. But there is concern about the three-day turnaround between Adelaide and Brisbane, followed by a seven-day break to Boxing Day and then a three-day gap to Sydney. The quicks themselves and the team management have publicly stated that playing all five Tests without a change, as they did last year, is highly unlikely.Related

Fast and furious: A spicy pitch awaits India in Perth

If two of the quicks were to go down, as they did in the 2021-22 Ashes and 2022-23 summer, then Australia would need another fast bowler beyond Boland. Neser’s unavailability brings the likes of Nathan McAndrew and Sean Abbott into the frame. But it is understood there is hope that Richardson, 28, could be fit enough to be considered as he continues his careful buildback from injury and other physical issues.Richardson took 1 for 19 from five overs at the MCG on Wednesday in his fourth List A game so far this summer to go with two second XI matches. He will not play in Western Australia’s upcoming Sheffield Shield game against Victoria at the Junction Oval starting on Friday. But speaking after WA’s One-Day Cup loss, Richardson said he was hopeful he could play in WA’s day-night Shield game against South Australia at Adelaide Oval, strting November 23, which could also be Lance Morris’ first Shield game of the summer.”Pending selection, hopefully next game,” Richardson said. “I’m still waiting to see what sort of restriction and stuff is put on that. It’s a pink ball in Adelaide, and, you know, I like playing pink-ball games, so I’ve been pushing hard to get into that one, but we’ll see how we go. Obviously, the plan’s not 100% finalised.”Richardson’s last Test match was a pink-ball game in Adelaide in 2021 when he took his maiden Test five-wicket haul against England. But he has endured a horror run with injuries since, including further shoulder and hamstring surgeries. On top of that, he has publicly acknowledged that a mental health battle has affected his physical conditioning. He is a different body shape to when he first started his first-class and international career and it has made him more susceptible to soft tissue injuries. He has been bowling without interruption since his return in IPL 2024 but as a Cricket Australia contracted player, a decision was made during the off-season that his build towards a first-class return would be gradual. There was a period as late as September where it was thought he may not play any red-ball cricket before the BBL.But since then he has strung together four List A games, taking 5 for 63, 3 for 36, 0 for 25 and 1 for 19 and two four-day second XI games for WA.”It’s been a little bit frustrating,” Richardson said. “But I was told that at the start of this whole process. I was told it was going to be slow and very purposeful. So we’re hopefully getting to the back end of it now, getting into some red ball [cricket]. Hopefully it’s all worth it.”The second XI returns were hugely encouraging. He was on heavy restrictions in the first game against South Australia in early October, bowling just ten overs in the first innings and six in the second. But his performance against New South Wales in early November has changed a lot of thinking around his progression. He took 4 for 13 from 11 overs in the first innings and backed it up with 1 for 30 from 14 in the second. It was the most overs he had bowled in a game in over 12 months.”To be honest, felt like I was alive again,” Richardson said. “The bones and the muscles were a little bit sore, but that’s a good thing. Means you’ve done something purposeful. Haven’t had that feeling for a long time. So very happy.Jhye Richardson’s first Test five-for sealed Australia’s win in the pink-ball Test against England in Adelaide back in 2021•AFP/Getty Images

“I think for the game, I bowled a spell of six, a spell of seven, and another two spells of six, or something like that. So they were relatively long spells, which is a good thing. I was able to sort of get into a bit of rhythm and feel what it’s like to bowl a long spell again.”I probably could have used another spell or two in there, but I’m very happy.”Richardson is still unable to throw from deep in the outfield due to the shoulder issue but he said it was manageable, while acknowledging fielding was an important part of contributing to the team.He was asked whether he thought he could handle playing back-to-back Shield games in late November and early December, before the BBL break. “I hope so,” he said. “I think I could.”Richardson confirmed he would go in the IPL auction but he did not have a target in mind in terms of his international return.”It’s [on] a game-by-game basis at this stage, especially with this process being a little bit slower,” he said. “It’s just looking forward to the game that I’ve got ahead of me. There’s so much talk about who’s going to be in and out with the Test squad and the changeover of personnel and stuff like that. But it’s not something that I can afford to think about too much. If I put too much pressure on myself, then it’s not good for anyone. So it’s just about playing these games, performing and getting through that’s the main thing for me.”

Aston Villa now racing to hijack West Ham move to sign "sensational" star

In an attempt to kickstart what has been a quiet summer transfer window, Aston Villa have now reportedly entered the race to sign a Bundesliga winner ahead of rival interest from West Ham United.

Aston Villa's difficult summer

When they failed to defeat Manchester United to secure Champions League football on the final day of the season, it was always going to be a difficult summer for Aston Villa. Their European fortunes ensured that they would have to face up to their PSR struggles and endure a window without spending big unless a number of stars went in the other direction.

To that end, the Villans have so far prioritised keeping hold of current stars rather than going in search of fresh faces. There has been interest in both Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez, for example, but the stance in the Midlands has remained ‘not for sale’. Whether that changes as Villa become desperate to act in the market remains to be seen, however.

The signings that have arrived, meanwhile, are young centre-back Yasin Ozcan, who is unlikely to break into Unai Emery’s best side at this stage, and backup goalkeeper Marco Bizot. To say Villa’s window has so far lacked excitement would be an understatement.

With a month remaining until the window slams shut though, that could yet change. The transfer rumours are still coming thick and fast even as those at Villa Park look to navigate PSR.

Lois Openda in action.

Among those mentioned has been Lois Openda. The RB Leipzig forward, whether in years to come or this summer if Manchester United get their wish, would be the perfect replacement for Watkins and an excellent signing.

The same can be said for another Bundesliga star too, as Aston Villa set their sights on getting their summer up and running at long last.

Aston Villa firmly in the mix to sign Adli

As reported by Caught Offside, Aston Villa are now firmly in the mix to sign Amine Adli from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder reportedly wants to leave the German club in search of consistent minutes and, although West Ham hold concrete interest, Villa could yet hijack the Hammers’ move.

Duran 2.0: Aston Villa in contact with “one of the best strikers in the PL”

Aston Villa have an opportunity to land their next Jhon Duran by signing this attacking menace.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 1, 2025

Valued at around €25m (£22m), Adli’s arrival would likely keep Aston Villa within the lines of PSR whilst handing Emery a much-needed boost in the form of a Bundesliga winner.

Labelled a “sensational talent” by U23 scout Antonio Mango in 2022, Adli still has every chance of reaching that level again by joining Aston Villa and Emery. The midfielder has experience at the very top level as a title winner and, at just £22m, could quickly become an undeniable bargain this summer.

Stokes lauds England's 'more dominant cricket' for series win in NZ

NZ captain Latham concedes his side was unable to cope with pressure

Ben Stokes has credited England’s “more dominant cricket” for securing their first series win in New Zealand since 2008, with Black Caps captain Tom Latham ceding his side were unable to cope with the pressure they were put under by the tourists.England needed just three days to secure a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, rounding out a thrashing of 323 runs at the Basin Reserve on Sunday afternoon. It comes a week after winning the opener at Hagley Oval by eight wickets.England arrived on day three on 378 for 5 in their second innings, already leading by 533. Joe Root’s 36th Test hundred eventually set New Zealand an improbable 583. They were bowled out for 259.The bulk of the work had been done on day one. England battled seaming conditions by sprinting to 280 all out inside 55 overs thanks to a remarkable 123 from Player-of-the-Match Harry Brook. They then channeled those same conditions to dismiss New Zealand for 125 in their first innings, with Brydon Carse’s 4 for 46 and Gus Atkinson’s 4 for 31 (including a hat-trick to finish the innings) leading the charge.Related

Stats – England's first series win in NZ since 2008

Stokes asserted it was England’s aggressive nature that allowed them to boss this match, and the series so far, particularly when up against it. Here, they were 43 for 4 before making it to 280. It was reminiscent of the first Test, when they rallied from 71 for 4 to make 499 – courtesy another Brook century – after New Zealand had posted 348.”To play the more dominant cricket over the days we have played so far,” answered Stokes when asked how this first away win in New Zealand for 16 years had been achieved.”In this Test in particular, on day one we were 43 for 4 to be here on the winning side on day three is quite phenomenal. We got bowled out in fifty overs (54.5) but we had 270 runs on the board which was a good score on that day one-wicket, and then we obviously had time left with the ball to be able to make some inroads. To score 270 and take five wickets at the end of day one (New Zealand closed on 86 for 5) really set this game up.””We back ourselves to be able to go out there and change games and we feel that there needs to be a bit of impetus put into the game, particularly with the bat.”As a bowler you want to be able to plonk it on a length and plonk it onto the top of off stump over and over again. But sometimes when a batter is brave enough to take you on and knock you off your length, it’s very hard to commit to still doing that.”Latham begrudgingly agreed with the sentiment. Though New Zealand knew what to expect – this was their seventh meeting and sixth defeat against England in the Bazball era. They were unable to halt the tourists’ – especially Brook’s – intent.”It’s the pressure they are able to put you under, especially with the bat. I think on day one it was offering enough for our bowlers and the way Harry played in that innings was outstanding.”Credit where it’s due. The way he played puts you under pressure from ball one. He played some incredible shots that you don’t necessarily see from other teams around the world.”Meanwhile, Stokes was unwilling to be drawn on whether Jacob Bethell has emerged as a challenger to Ollie Pope’s regular position at No.3.Following Jordan Cox’s broken finger, sustained on the final morning of England’s warm-up match in Queenstown, the decision was made to move Pope to six to allow him to keep wicket, with Bethell, the spare batter, brought in at first drop.Jacob Bethell seamlessly slotted into No.3 in New Zealand•AFP/Getty Images

Bethell struck an unbeaten 50 off 37 balls to take England over the line in their chase of 104 in the first Test, and bettered it with 96 in the second innings at Wellington. He missed out on what would have been his first professional century in just his 22nd first-class appearance.Pope has also excelled lower down the order. A vital 77 last week was followed by an equally important 66 here, both in rebuilding, fifth-wicket first innings stands with Brook, of 151 and 174, respectively.Pope has stated he wants to return to three, where he has been throughout Stokes’ tenure. But a conundrum is on the horizon with Bethell’s excellence and the return of Jamie Smith, who missed this tour for the birth of his son, Noah, who arrived last week.Stokes side-stepped the question, but heaped praise on the 21-year-old Bethell for the way he has stepped up a level in an unfamiliar role.”I know there was a bit made of Beth batting at three with his inexperience and the lack of first-class cricket batting up the top of the order.”But me and Baz don’t think like that. You’ve got a young lad with so much potential and so much talent, why not let him go out there and expose himself to Test cricket at its toughest.”As a young lad, I was devastated for him to not get that three figures. But I walked in and I said to him, “it’s only four runs, isn’t it?” And his response was “Yeah, but it would have been flair if I smacked that through the covers to bring it up.” Class. I think he’s proved a lot to a lot of people and proved why we rate him so highly.”

Everton in advanced talks to sign "great" int’l from Premier League rival

Ahead of their first Premier League game of the season, Everton are reportedly in advanced talks to sign a Premier League rival for David Moyes.

How Everton could line up against Leeds

The Toffees will have to wait until Monday to see their side in action, but that’s when they could get their first real glimpse of a new-look side. The likes of Thierno Barry, Adam Aznou, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish may all feature for Moyes’ side as he looks to ensure that Everton get off to a statement start against newly-promoted opposition.

Barry is particularly one to watch, especially against a Leeds side who could yet have former Everton man Dominic Calvert-Lewin to call on this weekend. Everton’s newest star will be hoping that it’s not the former striker stealing the headlines, however, and he instead begins to live up to his £27m price-tag.

After scoring 19 goals in all competitions at Villarreal last season too, the forward will be raring to go in the Premier League. Likely to start in a 4-2-3-1 system, Barry could be backed in attack by Dewsbury-Hall, the impressive Iliman Ndiaye and Carlos Alcaraz in a fresh Everton frontline.

Villarreal's Thierno Barry

Behind that attack, meanwhile, Idrissa Gueye and James Garner are likely to feature in front of a back four. The big question regarding Moyes’ defence will be whether Aznou gets his chance from the off or whether it will be Jake O’Brien preferred in the right-back role alongside James Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitality Mykolenko.

Whilst plenty of change has taken place throughout the squad, Jordan Pickford is set to remain Everton’s No.1 even in the face of competition from new man Mark Travers and one more potential incoming.

Everton in advanced talks to sign Tom King

According to The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, Everton are now in advanced talks to sign Tom King from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 30-year-old Wales international looks destined to add further backup behind Pickford and Travers as Everton complete their small rebuild in that department following the departures of Asmir Begovic and Joao Virginia.

Although King’s arrival won’t steal the same headlines as Grealish or Dewsbury-Hall, he is someone that will offer plenty of experience in the Everton dressing room and Wolves’ sporting director, Matt Hobbs, touched on that in the past.

Full of praise for the shot-stopper when he arrived in the Midlands, Hobbs told the club’s official website: “Tom is a player who has played a lot of league games, has a great stature, good physicality and plenty of experience from his previous clubs.

“With this experience, he will be able to help our younger goalkeepers develop, while also allowing those who need senior football the opportunity to gain it out on loan rather than keeping them around the club as back-up to Jose (Sa) and Dan (Bentley). To be able to get a player like Tom on a free was really pleasing.”
