Azam Khan's 72 off 41 balls leaves Kings on the brink of elimination

He put up a 125-run stand with Faheem Ashraf, ambushing Kings in a game they had been dominating from the start

Azam Khan scored a 41-ball 72•PCB

A remarkable counter-attacking knock from Azam Khan ambushed Karachi Kings, snatching a win away from them in a game they had been dominating from the start. Islamabad United’s middle order batter smashed an unbeaten 72 off 41, putting up a 125-run stand with Faheem Ashraf and helping seal a six-wicket win. The loss put Kings on the brink of elimination.United had never chased a target in excess of 200 before, so when Kings put up 201, thanks in large part to another outstanding knock from their captain Imad Wasim, their batters were up against it. They started brightly, as United always do, but Mohammad Amir struck early to remove Colin Munro, and despite a cameo from Alex Hales, Aamer Yamin cleaned him up with the last ball of the powerplay. Rassie van der Dussen saw one stay low against him from Tabraiz Shamsi, and all of a sudden, United were three down at the halfway stage, and the asking rate had crept above 12.But Azam had decimated Quetta Gladiators a week earlier, and while he was at the crease, United were in it. He slapped Imad Wasim for a four and a six in the 11th over – there had been no boundaries scored in the previous four. It got United up and running again. A pair of sixes off Shamsi in the next saw the asking rate creep under 12.Faheem provided support, if not too many runs, from the other end, but Karachi were growing desperate for a breakthrough. That showed, in particular, in the face of Amir, who appealed incessantly for far-fetched lbw calls, and burned both Karachi reviews with reckless abandon. The muddled thinking was obvious when, having run out of reviews, Amir frantically signalled for another one on yet another unrealistic shout, only to be reminded that wasn’t an option. But there was nothing clouding Azam’s judgment now. He came and went past 50 with a huge six off Yamin, and boundaries came in every over from the 11th to the last. When Faheem finally did join the party with a six in the penultimate over, United looked to have secured the points, before a six and a four from Asif Ali made it official. That meant this was yet another game that saw Imad amass runs in a match-losing cause. United had put Karachi on the back foot after an enterprising powerplay where Adam Rossington and Tayyab Tahir combined for 61 in the first six. Rumman Raees, Tom Curran and Hasan Ali each picked up a wicket early on, and Faheem joined in soon after to leave the lower middle order needing to salvage a tricky situation once more.It was Imad who answered the call of his team once more, a heroic one-man stand for a team that has come to rely on them. He helped Kings plunder 82 from the final six almost single-handedly, deploying an outstanding array of shots he never quite seemed to possess before this league, and certainly never strung together in such short order. The reverse sweeps off pace, the hooks and aerial drives were all incredibly productive, and the bowlers watched as Imad lay waste to what United thought was an encouraging first ten. There was even unselfishness towards the end as he refused to farm the strike in pursuit of a hundred, content to finish with an unbeaten 92. But, in what has become a familiar refrain this season, Imad might not have deserved to lose, but not enough of his team-mates deserved to win.

Noor Ahmad, Mohit Sharma lead the way as Titans defend 135

Rahul struggled after a bright start as LSG went boundary-less for the last 45 balls of the chase

Manjrekar: All of Hardik’s gears on display at Gujarat

A game that was very much in Lucknow Super Giants’ hands was snatched from them by the combined efforts of Noor Ahmad, Mohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami. The Gujarat Titans bowlers turned the tables on the hosts, when they needed a comfortable 31 to win from 36 balls with as many as nine wickets left and a well-set KL Rahul in the middle. The turnaround started with Noor Ahmad picking up two wickets for one run over nine balls, which put the pressure back on Super Giants as the equation reached 23 off 18. Mohit then sent down a flurry of accurate yorkers and slower balls for six singles, Shami bowled a tight 19th over for five runs, and when 12 were needed off six, Mohit pretty much shut the game out with the wickets of Rahul and Marcus Stoinis on the second and third balls of the last over. When 10 were needed off three, Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda were run out while attempting risky second runs and a dot ball sealed the win for Titans.Titans are on eight points now, like the three teams above them on the IPL points table, and extended their unbeaten record against Super Giants to 3-0.More questions on Rahul? When Rahul raced to 30 off 19 and led his team to 53 for 0 in the powerplay with Kyle Mayers, it looked like the LSG captain was ready to take the bowlers on on a slow and sluggish pitch. He and Mayers finished the boundary-laden powerplay on such a good score that the asking rate had come down to under six an over.Rahul brought up his fifty off 38 balls, stitched a fifty stand with both Mayers and No. 3 Krunal Pandya, and looked all set to see his side through when they needed 31 from the last six overs. But the Titans bowlers dried up the boundaries after the 13th over, and took advantage of Super Giants’ slow down to eventually emerge victorious. Noor’s second spell started the slide with wickets in consecutive overs when Krunal was stumped while going for a big shot and Nicholas Pooran was caught off the leading edge by Hardik Pandya while attempted a big sweep. When it came down to the last three overs, Rahul just couldn’t put away Shami and Mohit’s accurate deliveries and holed out before Stoinis did the same in the last over.Gujarat Titans’ slowest powerplay of IPL 2023There were early indications that the black soil pitch in Lucknow was going to help spinners a lot more than the quicks. They bowled three of the first six overs of the game and Krunal even found success when Shubman Gill came down to attack but handed an easy catch to long-off after the turning ball took a leading edge. Seeing the lack of pace on the pitch and knowing they needed someone senior to guide the innings, Hardik Pandya promoted himself to No. 3. Meanwhile, Wriddhiman Saha went all out attack and raced to 34 off 24 to push the score to 40 for 1, which was still Titans’ lowest in the powerplay this IPL.LSG’s spinners shows up. Kind ofSaha kept the tempo up by making room and coming down the pitch often, but he became Krunal’s second victim when he failed to clear long-on and fell for 47 off 37. By then, however, Saha and Hardik had bashed Ravi Bishnoi, Super Giants’ best bowler this season, out of the attack. His first two overs went for 25 runs.Super Giants turned to the experience of Amit Mishra, who sent down slow and loopy deliveries which made scoring even tougher. Abhinav Manohar took him on by targeting the long cover boundary where Naveen-ul-Haq took a stunning diving catch and Titans had lost wickets in successive overs to be 77 for 3 in the 12th over.Quiet death overs despite Hardik’s fiftyHardik had struck the only six of the innings when David Miller joined him at 92 for 4 in the 15th over, and Titans were in desperate need of runs. Bishnoi and Avesh Khan slowed them down further with tight lines and taking the pace off, and curiously they subbed out Mishra when he had two overs left. It meant Hardik faced Bishnoi in the 18th over and the Titans captain pulled him for 4, 6 and 6 in a 19-run over that ended a 27-ball boundary drought. The first of those sixes also took Hardik to his first fifty – off 44 balls – of the season to lift Titans almost single-handedly in the end.Even without Mishra, Super Giants emerged the better side in the last two overs as Naveen and Stoinis took all the pace off the ball, dismissed Hardik in the last over and kept Miller quiet to just 6 off 12 balls, which, thankfully for them, didn’t proved costly in the end.

Twin tons for du Plooy, Madsen strengthen Derbyshire grip

Record fourth-wicket stand of 267 leaves Worcestershire well off pace

Wayne Madsen and captain Leus du Plooy rewrote the record books as Derbyshire moved into a position of considerable strength on day two of the LV=Insurance County Champoionship encounter with Worcestershire at New Road. The duo scored centuries and broke a 31-year-old landmark in establishing a new Derbyshire record of 267 from 70 overs for the fourth wicket against the home side. They went past the previous best partnership of 218 by Peter Bowler and Chris Adams at Derby in 1992.Madsen has always enjoyed batting against Worcestershire and in 24 innings has struck four centuries and nine other fifty plus scores.Their efforts have given bottom-placed Derbyshire a realistic chance of completing a first win in 10 Championship matches since they triumphed in the corresponding fixture last season. They will begin day three with a lead of 137 and five wickets in hand and du Plooy unbeaten on 159. But they were aided by an uninspired performance by the home side who dropped both of the batters before they reached three figures.Du Plooy was put down on 69 off Indian pace bowler Navvdeep Saini, a sharp chance to Ed Pollock’s left at slip. And Pollock also spilled a more straightforward chest-high opportunity offered by Madsen on 94 against Leach.Leach was head and shoulders above the rest of the Worcestershire attack and he made the only breakthrough with the ball during the opening two sessions.Worcestershire were guilty of bowling too many ‘four’ balls during the first part of the day to hand Derbyshire a momentum they never relinquished and their ground fielding was also below-par.Derbyshire resumed on 32 for 2 and Leach made a further breakthrough with the fourth ball of the day. Brooke Guest did not move his feet to a delivery which nibbled away as he edged through to keeper Gareth Roderick. It was Leach’s 33rd scalp of the season and he asked questions of both batters during a typically probing opening spell. But Indian pace bowler Saini initially found it hard to find the right line and length on his debut He was driven for a succession of boundaries by Madsen and du Plooy and Dillon Pennington also leaked runs during his initial spell and the fourth wicket pair looked untroubled against the Kookaburra ball on a slow pitch.Matthew Waite had a moral victory when du Plooy edged the allrounder for four. But Derbyshire scored freely and Madsen’s 56 ball half century contained 11 boundaries. The 100 partnership was completed in only 19.1 overs and du Plooy followed Madsen to his fifty from 68 deliveries with 10 fours. The morning session produced 126 runs off 28 overs.Saini bowled with plenty of pace and aggression in the post lunch spell and should have had picked up the wicket of du Plooy on 69 but Pollock spilled the chance at slip away to his left.Leach replaced the Indian pace bowler and Madsen on 94 edged him at chest height to Pollock who again spilled the opportunity and immediately left the field clutching his finger.Madsen completed his fourth hundred against Worcestershire off 148 balls with one six and 16 fours and du Plooy followed him to three figures from 144 deliveries with 14 boundaries. The first delivery with the second new ball finally broke the partnership when Madsen was lbw to Leach for 143 and then Haider Ali tried to cut Pennington and feathered through to Roderick. But du Plooy went onto complete his 150 from 249 balls with one six and 19 fours before the close.

Hamilton Masakadza has resigned as Zimbabwe Cricket’s director of cricket after the team failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean. Masakadza had been appointed to the post in October 2019 after he retired from international cricket.Masakadza’s resignation comes three months after Dave Houghton had stepped down as head coach.Related

Dave Houghton resigns as Zimbabwe head coach

Zimbabwe appoint Hamilton Masakadza as director of cricket

“This decision has come about after careful consideration of the successes and failures of our cricket and my responsibilities,” Masakadza said in his resignation letter. “As much as there has been a lot of progress in my tenure, the fact remains that we are the only Full Member nation not participating at the next T20 World Cup after our shock loss to Uganda.”This was indeed one of the lowest points of my career and I take full responsibility as Director of Cricket.”Under Masakadza’s tenure, though, Zimbabwe had qualified for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where they progressed to the Super 12s. Masakadza also oversaw the successful staging of the Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2022 and the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 in Zimbabwe. Masakadza is now open to working in a different capacity for Zimbabwe Cricket.”This decision was a very difficult one to make and I remain fully committed to Zimbabwe Cricket and would very much be interested in serving in a different capacity as the organisation looks forward to hosting the Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2026 and the Men’s 50-over World Cup in 2027,” Masakadza said.

Derbyshire rue missed opportunities as Marcus Harris digs in

Dropped catches outnumber wickets taken as Leicestershire prosper between showers

Marcus Harris battled to 77 not out on a truncated day•Getty Images

Leicestershire 168 for 2 (Harris 77*) vs DerbyshireAustralian opener Marcus Harris underpinned Leicestershire on a day when Derbyshire fluffed their lines in the Vitality County Championship match at Derby.Harris kept his concentration through lengthy rain delays to score an unbeaten 77 from 147 balls but was dropped twice after Derbyshire elected to bowl first on a chilly opening day at the County Ground. Derbyshire also put down Rishi Patel who made 36 before he was bowled by New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner, who was the pick of the attack.Although 50 overs were lost, Leicestershire made good progress and closed on 168 for 2 with skipper Lewis Hill not out 34.Derbyshire’s previous home game against Gloucestershire had been a complete washout with no play possible on any of the four days and there was more frustration despite the match starting in bright sunshine. That proved to be deceptive as steely grey clouds rolled in with only 18 overs bowled in the morning session after Derbyshire put Leicestershire in on a green-tinged pitch.Derbyshire brought in fast bowler Pat Brown for only the ninth Championship game of his career with Ben Green making his Leicestershire debut following his loan move from Somerset.Sam Conners and Tickner shared the new ball and should have had both openers in the first half-hour of the day. Harris had made only 1 when he edged Tickner to second slip in the fourth over but Wayne Madsen put down a shoulder high chance. It was the sort of catch Madsen usually takes and there was more frustration for the home side when Patel was given a life on nine two overs later. Conners found the right-hander’s outside edge only to see Aneurin Donald spill the ball diving to his right at third slip. After electing to bowl, those chances had to be taken and Patel and Harris took advantage to guide Leicestershire past 50 before rain halted play shortly after midday. When play resumed at 2.05pm, there was more there for the bowlers but Derbyshire put down a third chance three overs into the afternoon session. Harris, who early on did not look entirely convincing, was on 26 when he edged Anuj Dal low to Madsen, who again failed to cling on.But the stand was broken in the next over when Tickner, who had posed questions for the batters with his disciplined line, found enough away movement to beat Patel’s forward defensive push and knock out off stump.Harris was six short of his fifty when the rain returned and kept the players off the field until 5.30pm. When the game restarted, Derbyshire quickly claimed a second wicket. Louis Kimber played at a good length ball from Conners without any foot movement and edged to third slip where Donald this time made no mistake. But the rest of a truncated day belonged to Harris and Hill who scored freely in the closing overs to take Leicestershire in two down.

Tottenham ready to move for "elite" Postecoglou replacement after Chelsea loss

A report in the aftermath of Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge claims that Daniel Levy is preparing to move for Ange Postecoglou’s replacement, following what was a sorry evening for the Australian.

Ange accused of row with Spurs supporters during Chelsea loss

Spurs succumbed to their sixteenth defeat of the Premier League campaign against Chelsea, with Enzo Fernández’s only goal of the game putting Postecoglou further on course to become the club’s worst-ever manager in the competition’s history.

Tottenham eyeing Ange Postecoglou replacement who Jurgen Klopp really likes

The Australian has opened up about his future at the club this week.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Apr 3, 2025

Last season, the former Celtic boss actually broke the record for best start made by a new manager since the Premier League’s inception, but now he’s on the verge of a far less impressive record following a real transformation from hero to zero.

The Lilywhites have coped with serious injury problems throughout 2024/2025 which have debilitated Postecoglou’s options, decreasing the chances of him making a success of this campaign, but there is also an argument to be made that the results still haven’t been good enough.

Postecoglou didn’t do himself any favours after instigating a row with Tottenham supporters on Thursday evening either. The 59-year-old cupped his ear to the Spurs’ away end when Pape Matar Sarr notched a brief equaliser against Chelsea, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up, and this was in response to boos over his decision to bring the Senegalese on in place of Lucas Bergvall.

Following the backlash, Postecoglou denied that was why he signaled the Spurs supporters.

“It’s incredible how things get interpreted,” Postecoglou said in a post-match press conference. “We’d just scored, I just wanted to hear them cheer. Because we’d been through a tough time, and I thought it was a cracking goal. I wanted them to get really excited.

“I felt at that point we could potentially go on and win the game. I just felt momentum was on our [side]. It doesn’t bother me, it’s not the first time they’ve booed my substitutions or my decisions, that’s fine, they’re allowed to do that. But we’d just scored a goal, just scored an equaliser, I was just hoping we could get some excitement.”

In any case, pressure is still mounting on the Tottenham manager, and an update has come to light on their links to Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

Tottenham preparing to move for Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola

According to TEAMtalk, Spurs are preparing to make a move for Iraola, and they regard the Spaniard as an “elite” young manager following his impressive campaign in the Cherries dugout.

Tottenham also believe they could “build a Premier League-winning side” with Iraola in charge, but they still have to convince him of the project.

He remains the top candidate to replace Postecoglou, following previous reports that Tottenham have Iraola as their top managerial target, and rumours of the 42-year-old’s potential switch to London look as if they will only intensify.

As well as Iraola, Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, Fulham’s Marco Silva, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and ex-Dortmund boss Edin Terzic have all been linked in recent months.
