Sky Sports man shocked at potential "enormous loss" for Burnley this summer

Burnley simply must tie one of their most influential players down to a new deal before his contract expires, according to Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman.

Burnley set for huge final eight Championship games

The Clarets have enjoyed an excellent season under Scott Parker, being famed for their defensive brilliance throughout the campaign, conceding just 11 goals in 38 Championship matches.

There are now just eight matches remaining in the league, and while Burnley sit in third place and just outside the automatic playoff places, they are only two points adrift of Leeds United and Sheffield United.

In the coming weeks, there are going to be some massive games to look forward to, with fine margins set to decide who goes into the Premier League and who has to deal with the tension of the playoffs in May.

Burnley getting back into the top flight is huge for so many reasons, not least retaining the services of their most important players, and a new claim has now emerged regarding one such figure.

Pundit urges Burnley to sort new deal for Brownhill

Speaking to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and co-commentator Goodman outlined the importance of Josh Brownhill signing a new deal at Burnley before his current contract expires this summer, being left shocked that the situation has come to this:

“I absolutely do think that Burnley should do everything in their power to keep hold of Josh Brownhill. He’s having an unbelievable season, and he’s already proved he’s more than capable of playing in the Premier League should that be where they find themselves next season.

“He’s got 13 goals and four assists this season, which is an incredible return, and I think it’s his best ever season. I know it’s the Burnley goalkeeper and defenders that are getting most of the plaudits, but he has been absolutely outstanding, it would be an enormous loss if they weren’t able to secure a deal for him. How on earth he’s been allowed to run his contract down to this point is beyond me really.”

Brownhill has been such an impressive performer for Burnley this season, standing out as not only their best midfielder but one of the best in the Championship in his position.

While famed for his industrious presence in the middle of the park, the Englishman has also scored 13 goals in the league, chipping in with four assists, too. Meanwhile, Parker is well aware of his quality, saying:

“There are not enough words to compliment Browny. He’s a driving force in this team, he’s got brilliant box habits and he’s always in and around the right areas. He’s got huge quality and he’s now got nine for the season, so he’s been fundamental for us.”

Losing Brownhill on a free transfer would be such a big setback for Burnley, so they must do all they can to convince him to stay, offering him the terms that he deserves.

West Indies women will now fly business class for long-haul international flights and stay in single rooms for international games, bringing them level with the travel policy for the men’s teams, according to Cricket West Indies (CWI).These decisions were made at the first CWI board of directors meeting following the election of new president Kishore Shallow in March.”The women’s game in international cricket continues to evolve, and CWI must keep apace and, where possible, lead,” Shallow said. “Introducing these policies and adding a second female to the board as an independent director are monumental strides in the right direction.”CWI also approved a new committee – the Women’s Cricket Transformation Committee – to work towards achieving equality for women’s players.”The committee’s remit will include but not be limited to recommending strategies geared towards increasing the interest and participation of women and girls in the sport, as well as proposing cricket competitions, events, and pathways that foster competitive women’s and girls’ cricket,” CWI said in a statement.”We welcome this move by CWI in the quest to achieve greater equality within our work environment among our cricketers,” Wavell Hinds, the president and CEO of the West Indies Players Association, said. “We look forward to achieving similar goals in our ongoing negotiations on the renewal of our MOU for another four-year period.”West Indies women play Ireland in June and July, followed by a tour of Australia in October, where they will play three ODIs and three T20Is.

Liverpool and FSG preparing £67m bid to sign "exceptional" Salah successor

Liverpool are believed to be willing to pay £67m to acquire the signature of an “exceptional” Mohamed Salah replacement this summer, should the Reds legend depart.

Doubts over Liverpool legends' futures

While Liverpool fans will be dreaming about seeing plenty of new signings arrive at Anfield in the summer transfer window, retaining the services of their most important players is equally important, if not more so.

As has been the case for most of this season, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Salah still haven’t committed their futures to the Reds, with their contracts now perilously close to expiring later this year.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold

Recent reports have suggested that Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid at the end of the campaign is “99% done”, while Van Dijk has been tabled an offer by Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile, Salah has talked openly about the situation for months now, almost challenging the club to give him what he wants, but as things stand, he appears to be no closer to extending his stay at Liverpool. Now, a potential successor to the Egyptian has been mentioned in a new transfer claim.

Liverpool preparing £67m offer to sign Salah replacement

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool and FSG are willing to spend £67m on RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons in the summer window, with the Reds considering him an “ideal” replacement option for Salah, should he depart.

They believe that the Dutchman can bring “dynamism and creativity” to their attack, and while he only joined Leipzig permanently from PSG in January, the Bundesliga club appear to be happy to cash in on their record signing.

Xavi Simons for RB Leipzig

It goes without saying that Salah signing a new contract remains the preferable option for Liverpool this summer, but if he does move on, Simons could be an excellent option to come in.

Still only 21, he is already such a consistent attacking player for Leipzig, scoring seven goals and chipping in with five assists in the Bundesliga this season, while Christoph Freund has hailed his ability, saying:

“He is a very good player. He had a very good European Championship and a great season with Leipzig. He’s developed really well. I think he’s going to have a really good career at the highest level. He has everything, mentality, character and is just an exceptional player.”

Simons enjoyed a memorable personal moment last summer, scoring a superb goal for the Netherlands in the semi-final of Euro 2024 against England. While his country went on to lose the game, it outlined the ability that the young attacker possesses.

The Leipzig ace is also versatile, which Arne Slot could like, being capable of shining out wide on both flanks, and in a central attacking midfield role.

"World-class" £150k-a-week Liverpool player could exit Anfield this summer

The club have made their decision about his future.

As mentioned, Simons hopefully won’t be needed because it means Salah is staying, but he could be a great long-term option to fill the eventual void left by Liverpool’s legendary No.11.

CRB ASSUSTA NO SEGUNDO TEMPO

Pakistan's participation at World Cup in India subject to government approval

“First it will be decided whether we are going or not, then the government decides where we will go,” PCB chairman says

Pakistan’s involvement at the 50-over World Cup in India later this year remains subject to their government’s approval. According to PCB chairman Najam Sethi, the board has written to the ICC, following the release of a draft schedule to all participating countries last week, to stress that they cannot unilaterally approve the fixture list.”We have written to the ICC that we can’t give approval or disapproval to this (World Cup schedule),” Sethi said. “It’s our government who has to decide, just like when it comes to India, it’s their government that decides when they go to play. There is no point asking us if we will play in Ahmedabad. When the time comes, first it will be decided whether we are going or not, then the government decides where we will go. Our decision will rest on these two important conditions.”Related

Pakistan's foreign office is evaluating the team's involvement in ODI World Cup

India vs Pakistan set for October 15 in draft schedule of ODI World Cup

The 2023 World Cup, as reported by ESPNcricinfo, is slated to begin on October 5. The India vs Pakistan fixture is set for 10 days later in Ahmedabad. Pakistan are scheduled to play across five venues during the league phase. They haven’t toured India since the 2016 T20 World Cup.There has been an unprecedented delay in announcing the schedule; World Cup itineraries are put out at least a year in advance. A fresh update may come on June 27.The BCCI secretary Jay Shah had originally indicated the fixture list would be made available during the World Test Championship final, played on June 7-11 in London. But that didn’t happen.Sethi suggested the delay could be because of the PCB needing more time to respond after the ICC had sought feedback on the World Cup itinerary from the boards of all the participating countries as well its broadcasters. “The BCCI were about to announce the schedule but we told them we can’t confirm without government approval.”Sethi did not put a timeframe on when the Pakistan government would give them an answer, but it is unlikely to be soon considering the country is preparing for the general elections due to take place in October.Najam Sethi speaks to media personnel outside the PCB headquarters•PCB

Even in 2016, the PCB had sought government clearance after which a three-member team came to India to do recon of the venues where Pakistan were scheduled to play their matches. Eventually Pakistan’s match at Dharamsala was moved to Kolkata.”I have taken up the issue with Prime Minister and they haven’t deliberated about this,” Sethi said. “The PM said they have to involve the foreign office as well and have to think through so it’s premature [to ask permission now]. Also, we don’t know who will be in power by then so there is no development right now. But when there is a stable government, the time will come and we will ask them [whether we can tour India].”We have also told ICC that considering the security situation, if our government allows us to go we will go otherwise we can’t do much. But if they give us permission then it comes down to our venue preference where we are going to play. It’s the government’s decision, not the board’s so we leave it to them. The PCB and BCCI can’t decide. Our respective governments will take that call just like we did back in 2016.”India and Pakistan will be facing each other several times over the coming months with the Asia Cup starting August 31. The tournament will be played in Pakistan and Sri Lanka with PCB as the official hosts. This hybrid model was PCB’s idea in response to Shah saying India will not be visiting Pakistan for the Asia Cup.The PCB took strong exception to Shah’s statement and initiated discussions with all participating boards until finally there was a consensus. While Sethi said a full schedule will be put out in a week’s time, it is known that four matches will take place in Pakistan and remaining nine will be held in Sri Lanka, including the final. India and Pakistan, who are in the same group as Nepal, will face each other twice during the group stages, and then once more if they make the final.”The formula we gave to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was a middle ground, it was not like win or lose but it was a rational way to the problem. The schedule is being worked out, we demanded few changes and the debate is ongoing on it, but they have already said that there will be four games in Pakistan. There’s a misconception that there are two hosts, all the gates receipts are ours. Initial four matches will be in Pakistan and then the teams will travel back to Sri Lanka. It’s a very tight schedule and there are lots of logistical issues. We sat together with broadcasters and the five participating countries and it wasn’t easy to finalise it. But finally, we have broken the ice and tackled all the problems.”Sethi also highlighted how difficult it was to arrive at this solution. “India has a big clout in the ICC, and you can well imagine how much their clout would have been in the ACC. We did a lot of hard work, nobody was willing to listen to us. I pulled the strings, did several meetings in Dubai and Bahrain, and countless Zoom calls and then we reached that we are the hosts. They were even saying that we will take the hosting rights from you and give them to Sri Lanka. But finally, our hybrid model was accepted. The importance of the hybrid model will be known to you in the future when we want to use it.”

Warwickshire 549 for 7 dec (Yates 228, Maxwell 81) beat Kent 171 and 332 (Finch 67, Leaning 64, Denly 45, Hannon-Dalby 4-59) by an innings and 46 runsWarwickshire have thrashed Kent by an innings and 46 runs in their LV= Insurance County Championship game at Canterbury, bowling the hosts out for 332 on day three.Oliver Hannon-Dalby took four for 59 in the second innings and finished with eight for 115 in the match, as Warwickshire issued a warning to their title rivals with an overwhelming victory.Harry Finch made 67 and Jack Leaning 64, but the hosts were left to rue a dismal first-innings performance and remain mired in a relegation battle.Kent began day three on 55 for one, still 323 behind Warwickshire’s first innings score of 549 for seven, with Joe Denly and Ben Compton not out on 29 and 17 respectively. An early appeal for a catch off Compton’s shoulder drew a cry of: “Are you Australia in disguise?” from the Frank Woolley Stand and although he survived that one, he became the morning’s first victim in the 26th over, when he nicked Hannon-Dalby behind for 26.Denly made 45 from 105 balls before he was removed by Hannon-Dalby, caught by Michael Burgess after the ball seemed to ricochet off his pads.Finch and Leaning batted through till rain brought an early lunch at 12.52 pm. Play resumed at 2.15, with nine balls bowled before a second, briefer delay of 20 minutes, resulting in a cumulative loss of nine overs. It was Kent’s biggest stand of the match and worth exactly a hundred, but it ended when Leaning fell into a trap. With three fielders crowding the bat on the leg side he tried repeating a shot he’d played in Yates’ previous over and this time the bowler had him caught by Jacob Bethell.Jordan Cox lasted 17 balls before he tried to sweep Yates and was lbw for four, leaving Kent on 223 for five at tea.Finch’s obdurate innings came to an end when Chris Rushworth bowled him off stump with the new ball and when Henry Brookes had Joey Evison caught behind for 37, the last of Kent’s defensive-minded batters had gone.Grant Stewart decided to have some fun, whacking successive sixes off Rushworth including one that went into a third-tier balcony in the Old Dover Road flats and he hung around for 44 balls, putting on 64 with Hamid Qadri before he hit Hannon-Dalby to Glenn Maxwell at gully for 40.Any realistic hopes Kent had of taking the game into a fourth day ended when Qadri went to the very next ball, lbw to Maxwell for 30 and the victory was confirmed when Arshdeep Singh drove Hannon-Dalby to Will Rhodes at mid on in the next over.
